Could you give up the clothes you derive enjoyment from in order to simplify/downsize your lifestyle? I ask because a friend who relocated to God's country, Ridgely, Maine, is imploring me to consider doing the same, where I'd be run out on a rail if I were to wear almost anything from my closet.

One reason I like clothes is that I like design in general. I appreciate well made objects. Classic, "timeless" designs. Or near timeless. Maybe a lot of people would say that the 3/2 sack suit is a icon of a very specific time however.
I'm also interested in the tension between the "machine age" and the age of the artisan who crafted something by hand. I think there's a lot of interesting "machine made" designs. In any case, I have an appreciation for quality (and a willingness to pay for it if I can afford it), so it's nice to read about new (or old) things here.
I like details in other areas of my life or I have been required to pay attention to those details, and so I find the "details" and the detail freaks amongst the denizens of our forum to be very interesting.
I like wearing clothing but I tend not to buy very much of it. Though reading about places I didn't know, like Ben Silver (and having just bought a bunch of stuff from them), I find it worthwhile to explore new avenues for the sartorial imagination.
Grayson's comments about the eschewing the sartorial togs in which we've become accustomed deserves more treatment that I can give it here, so will wait for another day. Though I have to say, the idea of say, solely 1 dozen white Brooks button-downs, a few navy blue suits and repp ties sound good.
Apart from the 'Wardrobe as Weapon' aspect that I enjoy all the rest is just aesthetic for me.
I like a certain softness of cut & construction in my clothes... A certain weight of shoe...
So I like all that classic American stuff.
S'nice.
Just clothes mind you... Meaningless schmutter I schlep over my slopey shoulders to hang around in.
