Alan Whicker RIP

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-23287351

From an era when people travelled less. Whicker was reporting from the remotest and most exotic locations and was obsessed with the rich.

He had his own dress style too. Properous dentist? A few years earlier and he would be wearing a cravat.

"Florid, smug, middle-aged golf club bore in this country I'd say. Propping up the 19th hole in deepest Surrey bemoaning the perils of immigration."

Whicker was brilliant.

What a life...

Re: Alan Whicker RIP

He was the last of the presenters who could meet the jet-set at their level and give the viewer a glimpse of this world as unequals. Now we have Palin, a likeable everyman who likes everyone. It's just not the same.

Indeed, they don't make them like this anymore, magic in narration and perhaps, film as opposed to video:

Re: Alan Whicker RIP

Alan Wicker on clothes:

'I always pack a blazer because you can wear it on the beach or in the Governor's palace and not look out of place'

When he played a cameo role in a 1999 film the costume department asked him what he had worn in the 1970s he replied 'You're looking at it'

'I am a closet optimist' Leonard Cohen.
