Now he has been acquitted riots are expected.
UK race politics often follow where US leads.
I don't think this has anything to do with politics, it is to do with the interpretation of law.
The role of Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson etc. has more to do with race politics than the law.
They are helped by sections of the media who show photographs of a twelve year old Trayvon and quote selectively from police reports. Obama's statement was not helpful either.
Well, you're dead right there Kingy. I'm not convinced this will lead to blood on the streets, as there was a lot of grey areas in this case.
God I hope so. I love a good bloodletting. First to go: all the media opiners, facebook and twitter users commenting on the case, the entire state of Florida. Deus vult.
a gun is such a crude implement for law enforcement .. it ejects a piece of metal which smashes into someone's body .. cant they come up which something which will incapacitate someone without loss of life? what's the fascination with guns?
This case really was about gun culture and violence, less so about race. If Zimmerman had been carrying pepper spray or a collapsible baton or a morning star or something then Martin might have survived and we would have seen a much more lively trial. Dipshits like Zimmerman should not be allowed to carry lethal firearms (Captain Preppy may have something interesting to say on this front).
The DA bit off way more than he could chew by charging Zimmerman with second degree murder. There was simply no evidence to make that case. I'm a little surprised that the jury didn't return a manslaughter conviction, since it seems like manslaughter is what it obviously was.
At any rate Zimmerman is a hacked-off little turd who wanted to pretend to be Robocop; we'll never know what Martin thought about the whole thing. I don't think that there will be riots.
It was an unfortunate collision between a wannabe cop and a wannabe thug.
Too bad one of them was strapped.
I just got back from rioting. I totally threw this empty starbucks coffee cup into the trash. The coffee spilled everywhere inside of the trash can. BOOM.
On the evening of the killing , Zimmerman is supposed to have said: "Fucking punks... These assholes. They always get away."
I have to admit that I do not like a lot of young men, and psychological tests would probably reveal that it would be unwise to allow me to carry a gun in the vicinity of young men.
Surely it could be possible to administer attitudinal testing prior to issuing licenses for firearms.
It is odd compared to the rest of the western world, how many Americans feel or have real need to live in gated communities with their own private security. Outside of South Africa and other second world nations, I see no other modern nation where you have to go such lengths to protect yourself from all the gun totting, meth snorting, crazies and pyscho killers. Which, a few notable serial killers aside in places like the UK, the US led the world since the 1960s.
Interesting, I automatically assumed it was to do with the dangers of gun crime.
It's hard to draw the line between pretension and paranoia, but I have read that the eradication of housing projects and liberal attempts to integrate the urban poor into middle class suburbs have basically resulted in a proliferation of decentralized criminality. As much as I despise the bourgeois bunker mentality, I am sure there are many locales where a gated community is the only sane living option.
Funnily enough, around me, the gated communities are in the areas with the least amount of crime. I mean, there are of course inner city developments where you can tell the gate is there for practical purposes. But out in the burbs the gate may only protect you from some unruly teens tipping your marble lawn ornament. Crime has spread out of the depressed urban areas over the past few years, but currently we're seeing more crime - auto theft, armed robbery, assault, etc, in the inner city neighborhoods that were formerly depressed, low income, mostly black but are now being increasingly populated by younger whites that want in town living - young whites that are often really naive and have their faces in their iphones while walking past a crack house. Very easy targets in other words. You also see the city street with tiny, run down shotgun houses and then right next door is a brand new hulking 3 story residence that probably costs close to a million bucks, with a fence and gate around it.

I can understand working hard (or not working hard) for your money and having lots of it and having nice things and then wanting to protect them. Or, wanting to protect your family. I'm not saying here that I just think gated communities are only for the pretentious.
