Lots of gated communities in Britain too.
Lots of the inner-city developments built in the Blair-Brown years are.
So much for community living.
Gating is routine now. New flats by the river. I have even seen gates on Peabody Buildings. It is probably a worthwhile measure against opportunists looking for easy burglary targets. A concierge might be as effective and give employment at the same time.

Yeah, Trayvon Martin is the corpse in question; George Zimmerman is the guy that corpsified him.
How many times must a guy have his head thumped against concrete before he can use a weapon to defend himself?

I keep a .32 caliber handy. Not the most stopping power, but at close range, in my house, it should do the trick. I'm a pretty good shot. I'll add that I'm not a gun guy. I've only ever used it at the range, to familiarize myself with it. I hope to never have the need to actually reach for it. My household would have to be in serious imminent danger. It's not like I'd go chasing some meddling kids out of the rose bushes with it.

^Evidently, yes.
Now half the jurors are saying he was guilty, one was going to write a book, now she isn't. Or is she just looking for the right literary agent.
Gated communities are the norm throughout human history.
If I had a gated community that tattooed bum wouldn't be shacking up next door.
