I keep being surprised by my critics who link their dislike of me to social class. Do people really care about social class anymore?
I've genuinely never given a monkey's about it. If anything, opting out of the whole business has always been my approach. I don't give a damn about either Chavs or the Royal Family.
I just find it interesting that some people still do.
Nobody can help their background and the idea that anybody 'represents' the class or educational background they came from is highly suspect to me. As far as I can see all this class business is just other people's baggage, nothing to do with me & my life.
What's the point in caring about it in the world in which we live today ?
I honestly don't understand.
Social climbers and those uncertain of their own station care a great deal. Of course, in both cases one signs on to idea of social class ab initio. Slowly the concept is being obliterated in the USA, but into the vacuum economic class has rushed in.
I'm just here for a good time.
Best way.
Chatting to Mates and none of us can see a difference between the Trad's love of the Upper Class & the Mod's love of the Working Class. It's just the same load of old balls.
Especially as, in reality, they're both bunches of middle class guys on the whole, no matter where they started from.
I'm more concerned with what I am doing rather than some ancestor. I can rub noses in a family tree with just about anyone in America. But who would care? No one I would want to be around.
I suppose it is sometimes amusing to see the struggle and how the poseurs get it wrong. But usually it is just grotesque.
Muffy is a good example. I actually like old Muffy, but man she desperately wants you to know where she and her people came from. That's great for genealogy, boring for almost everyone else not related.
Why can't she relax and enjoy her garden and sweaters? Whence the anxiety? Perhaps the breakdown of social class and a society that no longer automatically defers to her kind is causing it.
Genealogy seems to be an obsession in parts of America. I always laugh when Americans put numbers after their name, e.g. Davis Love III
I only judge or give a crap about the individual - their character and personality, period.
I do have some people like this on my mom's side of the family. No joke.

For some reason I get kind of irritated when born Americans are really hung up on their heritage. So your great great grandfather was Irish and all you're going to do is talk about Ireland all the time and have a bumper sticker of Ireland and say "Oh, it must be my Irish blood." Oh, forget that fact that you've never even been there!

Does class still exist in Britain? Yes.
...but it now manifests its self differently these days.
The rules of the game have changed.
There's non of this U non-U shit and you're as likely to see the son of an ex-footballer at a public school these days as you are the son of a Duke.
We seem to be realigning along US lines.
...just a few thoughts.

I have nothing against anyone of any class. Sitting in the middle as I do. I do think though that Jim likes to think he's a bit of a lad. A bit of a street wise kiddo, truth is he's the sort of nerdy fooker than would have been bullied to fuck in any inner-city area. He seems to think that coming from a bit of money is something to be ashamed, that somehow living like a tramp in a bedsit (read living like a twat) somehow gives him kudos points in being cool ,cause his ilk have never done that. Of course any hoho who's been poor is too intent on getting out of the estates to think being skint makes you cool. He's like Ivy's answer to Polly Dean. People like that I find patronizing tossers.
