Re: French Hip.

I was thinking about this the other day after a conversation about Les Minets and 60s French Films...

what exactly would the defining characteristics of "french cool" be?  In my own head, it's always been minimalist suitings, almost worn with a streetwear attitude (not a "suit" attitude), and casual wear that is also minimal in color and simple pieces that are well fitting.

Re: French Hip.

Seems a bit more like French hip-ster. Not entirely removed from hip of course. Generally, I speak about being hip at the office because after hours hip can vary a great deal depending on time place and purpose. I would think of French office hip as shopping from head to toe at Hermes.

Re: French Hip.

I'm loving all this more and more...

French Ivy League 'Minet' style
Spiked black coffee
Girls with long legs
Cigarettes
Unmade beds
Breakfast out
Jazz
Kisses that could bruise your lips
Staying out so late it's early

Ahhhh - What it is to be a middle-aged accountant!

Re: French Hip.

At my 23rd birthday party about 10 of us did this in my living room.  We didnt have the music so we just played the clip over speakers.  All appropriately attired and whatnot.  If i was going to get my first double breasted i would get one cut like Sami Frey's.  I wonder how many Francophile American hipsters have tried running through the Louvre.

French hip? L'histoire de Melody Nelson, Jean-Claude Vannier, Pierre Henry, Jean-Jacques Perrey, et plus plus plus ... Charles Boyer's Where Does Love Go (Elvis's favorite album) ... vintage Vuarnet, Aigle, Charvet, 1971 Citroen DS-21 ... of course Gustave Courbet's L'origine du monde ....

Re: French Hip.

I just saw the Jean-Pierre Melville film <<Army of Shadows>>.   It's now out on DVD.   I don't think it appeared on the screen in the US until recently.  Not sure about other English-speaking countries.  Clothes aren't as hip as some of the other Melville offerings.

Re: French Hip.

Let me commit heresy with the Capone Kids and offer the following as a strong contender with Bogart's hat and trench for replacing the latter's iconic status:

Re: French Hip.

The above is in no way at odds with Chris_H's post:

He saw this stuff in 'Squire' in the late 60's before it really took off...
And 'Squire' opened as an Ivy shop in late '68 because 'The Ivy Shop' had done so well up Richmond Hill...
... Then this new hip style started to filter through from the continent...
