any recommendations on where to get a decent pairs of boxer shorts? Ones which wont ride up / chafe / twist & have a sensible amount of rise making walking torture? I usually go to M&S but their boxers rise seems to have shrunk over the years (im sure the BBCs Jeremy paxman made a fuss about this in the papers a couple of years ago .. I can only assume M&S didn't give a toss).
The style bloggers recommend boxers which seem to be designed by various couples or zimmereli .. but the prices are around 80 bucks or so which imho is far too much for cotton underwear.

New & Lingwood - cut out of shirting material, roomy and high-rise, sans-twist, last forever.

The most voluminous and roomy I have ever found are from Max Boxxer. Beyond the generous cut, the elastic is wonderful in not digging in at all.

I like Brooks Brothers tie back (or French back with buttons). No elastic digging in when I am sitting at my desk. Not as good if your weight fluctuates a lot.

Fruit of the Loom.
Anything slim, short, brief, elastic is taboo for men.
I like the Brooks Brothers Boxers and the Tommy Hilfiger Boxers. Both are roomy and soft. Also take a beating. The Hilfiger ones have a button on the fly which can come in handy when drinking and wearing light colored khakis.
Mercer and Sons. Oxford and pinpoint are both recommended.
Primark. Better quality cotton than M&S and cheap as chips.
^ Yes better than M&S.
