ZF makes a hell of a drive train. Even Bigfoot uses their crap.
It is strong, that's for sure (the Torqueflite). I think the advantage of the Powerglide is in the fact that it acts almost like a CVT in that the fluid coupling allows a certain amount of 'slip' (important for good consistent launches) and allows the engine to use the two gears more effectively. In drag racing, 'supreme' and 'most wide spread' are synonyms. Whatever you see the most of is usually the best.
I should point out that the 'Glides used in drag racing weren't just pulled out of an old six cylinder Impala and hustled down to the drag shop for installation. Most of them have no GM parts in them at all. It's just GM's design.
They have a seriously complex steering arrangement. If I recall correctly, the rear wheels steer counter to the front to enable tighter turns with all that heavy duty running gear.

Do you think that there are many clothing forums around today that have threads that start out about used SEL's and end up with monster trucks?
I can only think of one.
Damn right.

If you ever want a 'holy crap I hope I don't die' thrill ride, hitch a ride in something running nitromethane.
