Reclaiming The Beard From The Hipster...

Just started in on my beard for Yom Kippur.

Any love for the non-Hipster beard on here ?

I keep it short & trimmed. A bit  Hipster really...   BAH !

Without a beard, you're the same as any other woman or child.

I've had a beard since 1992.  I started off with the mustache/goatee, then evolved to the full beard a few years later.  Now it's sort of a short, trimmed-low-on-the-cheekbones jaw-hugging kind of thing.  Pete Townshend-esque, I would say.

Re: Reclaiming The Beard From The Hipster...

Most of the orthodox Jews I work with wear them. They are not of the untrimmed variety, so they look decent. During the three weeks and other periods they let them go. It begins to look a little gross at those points.

My dad was always clean shaven except when he and his friends went to Ontario every year for fishing. Then he would come back with 2+ weeks of a beard. It scared the hell out of me to see him like that.

I remember my mom kissed Mr. Wolfe (perfect name) at a party at our house once. Mr. Wolfe had a mustache and I remember she liked it. The swinging 70s. That too freaked me out.

I would just look like a gay man if I tried to grow a beard. My uncle wears a beard and I look quite a bit alike him. He is gay.

So, yeah, I won't be growing a beard, but I support anyone's efforts to do so. I am also a supporter of gay rights.

I wear one for the High Days & Holidays...

And I regard it as a thing to be 'worn'.

Like a tie or a scarf.

I'm 'Reform'.

The Townshend beard is my ideal... Christmas 1987 at The Ivy Shop and Sir John Lally sold him two pairs of Sebbys.

I just hung out and chatted to the great Ian Strachan.

Roll on 3 months & the great John Gall was doing my job there.

Re: Reclaiming The Beard From The Hipster...

A beard is a commitment.  No wonder it's been used as a religious symbol for centuries.  You can't really fake it; either you have a beard or you don't

The Amish get one when they marry.  In Islam you are instructed to "trim the mustache but let the beard flow".  Even the Cuban revolutionaries believed in the beard.  The length of your beard showed how much time you had spent in the hills, away from luxuries like hot water and razors.

When I was into motorcycles, I once went for two years without shaving or trimming my beard.  It was an awe-inspiring sight.  Now I keep it trimmed close.  I've thought of shaving it off, but I just can't bring myself to do it.  I have forgotten what my chin looks like.  Maybe it's really ugly, and that's why I covered it up in the first place.

You can let your hair grow out but stay clean shaven and keep The Look. You can keep the hair short and neat and grow out the beard some and keep The Look.

But can you grow out your hair and your beard and keep The Look?

Long hair maybe, but a really long beard is hard to grow and look good with.  Once it gets beyond the "noticeably trimmed" stage, you can dress up all you want but you'll just look like a well-heeled hobo.

I like a Jazz beard.     MJQ-ish.

Jazz Grooming deserves a thread...

I'll get a photo of my 2 day old efforts up here so you can scream hatered at me, if you fancy.

It won't change my chin, but you will all be welcome to scream, roar, cry, pee your pants and vent your spleen.

- If I can stop any of you from beating your wives and kicking the dog by letting you yell hatred towards me online then my living will not have been in vain...

Shalom.

Chin pic to follow !

It's ever more 'pepper & salt' as I slowly decay. I'm only really growing it to intimidate the neighbour's cat... 'You pee in my garden, I'll pee in yours' I told it. It looked quite alarmed at the thought of  that. And so did the bloke next door....

Neighbours, everybody needs good neighbours.

I feel like you could do better. I mean he's cute in that English bulldog way, but pretty he is not.
