Surely what's more interesting than whether the tie is authentic is why this look is considered English? Where does it come from and why is it admired. And who admires it? Is it the values of education, class (Upper, middle?), behavior, dignity?
When was the last time you saw someone dressed like this? Is it more of a composite? Why is this a good look? What does it tell you about the wearer? Is he richer, more interesting, more deviant? Is his behavior divorced from the look or a part of it?

I am not interested in the psychology or details. I just buy and wear what I like, provided it fits of course. I also have no need for conformity (a typical iGent trait) or titillation. Conformity extends to other aspects of individuals' lifestyle, e.g. the need to be seen to like the "right" music, e.g. the Ivyists obsession with jazz. The other iGent trait is a need to get the "details" right, also very prevalent amongst the Ivyists, that often results in "uniforms".
A face speaks more than clothes, an expression a way of carrying oneself, a bearing, a general demeanour.
