Re: The English Look...

The main reasons America dressed like bums for the last several decades are:

1. Boomer generation created youth culture and at the same time refused to retire. they associated jacket and tie with their parents and demonized it.

2. Lower class people who couldn't compete and wanted their share of the goodies from youth culture assisted in demonizing tailored clothing.

3. Men felt that the suit and tie made them seem older and wanted to get their paws on younger women. What they didnt know was that clothing doesnt make you look older. Looking older makes you look older.

However,

Now youth culture loves tailored clothing! People assume i am much younger because of jacket and tie wearing. GO...FIGURE.

You will see young men wearing suits on the weekend just for laughs.

Re: The English Look...

Oh shit...

Let's get this back on track.

A: Sorry to hear about your sister, Bish.  My sister went through the same thing about six years ago.  Scary stuff.

B: FNB, I would add Number 4 to your list: People somehow got the idea that dressing appropriately is 'uncomfortable'. Not sure where that came from, but now it seems to be an acceptable excuse for going outside in your PJ's.

Re: The English Look...

I see the English as contrast dressers. Shirt should be paler than jacket and tie darker than shirt without the ground color clashing or matching with the jacket color.

The English like simplicity. Out of all the crazy  Turnbull and Asser or Harvie and Hudson offerings, the English will select the same patterns or variations on a pattern and forgo most of the selections. Collars are always moderately spread with the button down creeping in for casual.

The English often consider the white shirt a casual item and will wear it with a tweed suit or jacket which is the opposite of how most cultures view the white shirt.
