I do agree that the conventional British mindset is to be rather proper and traditional, however there also seems to be that iconoclastic element that might constitutes what people call "British eccentricity".

Certainly, there are numerous examples of the English love of subversion and insinuation, not only seen in their ribald, leering comedy, but also their habits--colorful hose and such. Also, traditional English grooming is much more "fussier" than Americans are used to; or at least to the eyes of Americans.

It's sort of that cultural paradox which makes it all the more interesting.
