I think the stark contrast between PJ and those from the 'hitherworld' are that PJ does not let the clothes wear him.

What bookstore do you think that is? Looks like an older Waterstone's or maybe a particular store I have in mind in the US.
I read all of PJ until Parliament of Whores/Give War a Chance. He wrote <<All the Trouble in the World>> at that time as well.

Agree with the above poster that works on O'Rourke b/c the clothes do not wear him. No more succinct way to put it...these are functional, those are outfits.
I had a thought today at work, regardless of whether there is a "Godfather" of AA trad, this is surely the Godmother, or at least the English great-aunt.
