l've got a bunch of vintage Florsheims and they are great. Still got a black longwing that hasn't been worn yet...i'll wear it in 20 years when my other black pair is stuffed. They fit good. Got bandaid tan, tan, burgundy shell and some black pairs. Would be nice to get some more NOS Florsheim vintage longwings for some shelf display items....don't get much of a chance to wear my Florsheims much, but l am keen on buying some more for display items to put under glass in the loungeroom so l can check `em out each day as l go by. l wouldn't mind building up a display case of NOS shoos.

My first splurge item was shoes. When I started university I used some of my school money to buy my first pair of good shoes. I still have the black captoes over twenty years later. My second pair was Florsheims 3 years later which is what led me to take shoe quality and construction more seriously. The Florsheims had already started making crap at the time and after the third wearing I put them back in the box. Plastic torture devices that I gave to someone I didn't like. For my third pair I was able to get a pair of NOS at the time Dack's longings that were made in the factory in New Brunswick. Once I started wearing these I couldn't go back to the usual crap on the shelves of most shoe stores. The shoe journey began.

The other item I can't help myself with is early to mid century sterling cufflinks. I have a few favourite Danish makers. The sad thing is I haven't worn most of the pairs, yet keep buying more when I see another pair I like. I need to buy more french cuff shirts.

I was in a store called The Shoe Box yesterday. They sell mostly casual shoos, work and cowboy boots, but they also have dress shoos. I checked out their Florsheim display. The shoos are nice looking, but they definitely can't hold a candle to the old ones I have. Much lighter; not at all tank-like like my old boys. The leather was chintzy feeling and the soles seemed much thinner. I reckon a pair of modern Florsheim longwings weighs less than one of my old Florsheim stompers.

A shame, really. The guy that owns this place is a real shooman. He loves shoos, and he stocks over 3000,000 pairs, but I guess he's stuck selling whatever crap his various distributors are making these days.

I spend a lot of money on sports jackets .. I don't need more sports jackets but I've got something in my head which says 'this will be really useful to wear in all sorts of different types of place with different trousers'. wardrobe is now overflowing.

Also, buy a lot of loafers, English C&J , Weston 180s , Gucci Snaffles .. bridges the gap between formal and casual.
