Once again, I have 3/2 roll questions...First, it seems like some period sports coats were meant to have the highest of the three buttons buttoned, and the lapels pressed flat. True? Other 3 button coats seem to been best buttoned at the second button with the lapel rising from there into that gentle rolling curved look (and an unbuttoned top, or highest, button). Yes?
Another question- anyone have success creating a three button jacket out of a two button one? I have this JCrew jacket that I like a lot. It's a two-button thing. I'm already thinking of bringing it in to have the shoulders reduced and thought I'd ask you all about a button conversion (and whether they work.)
Nice fall day here in Manhattan...
On count 1: Yes. That there's the difference between a 3 button and a 3/2. But you don't have to button the top button on a 3 button. You can just let the lapels do their thing. You see this often "back in the day". I often wear my 3 buttons like that. Just button the middle button.
On count 2: I think Oliver has experimented with this. He may offer insight. In theory it could be done, depending on the button stance of the particular jacket.

Clocked that earlier. That's a cool jacket.
I picked up one of those a while back...nice jackets indeed..
Wasn't too sure about the bottom 2 buttons initially but it's grown on me...
They're always in beige or mustard these things, eh?
I have done the 3/2 alteration, to varying results.
In one instance, a vintage Clipper Craft, the results were indiscernable. The lapel was soft and pliable to begin with so it fell naturally and looked second nature to the jacket. The button stance was right and you couldn't tell any tailor had gone to work on it. The positioning of the buttons is key.
I've actually fared far worse in transforming full 3-buttons to 3/2. On a vintage Brooks madras with stiffer lapel that I've steamed the shit out of, it still wants to sit as a three button and feels as though it falls unnaturally.
The biggest thing to take note of when considering adjusting a 2 button to 3/2, is whether or not transforming the lapel will result in adding bulkiness to the chest, causing the jacket to poof out. Typically this shouldn't be the case as you're cutting a hole and stiching on a button - simple enough. But determine exactly how the jacket will sit on your frame before deciding on this, as I've had one bad experience. Generally it's an easy and inexpensive alteration though.

Jdemy i know you are trying to be helpful and i have been guilty of exactly the same thing in the past myself.
However you pm'd me a link to a shirt earlier this week i thanked you and told you i had already spotted it
and was watching it.You have now posted it here for all to see which could well bump up the eventual price
it goes for.We have an unwritten rule on here that we only post links to buy it now items.
Liam, you've played the Shatner card very early, a bold move.
