Your favorite tie with seersucker (for those who wear it)

Wearing my grey-white seersucker suit for a dance next weekend at which the men in attendance will wear a somewhat more tasteful/suitable combination than is generally seen on AAAC of "go to hell" clothing.

For those who wear them, I'm interested, for purely selfish reasons of getting new ideas, as to what ties you think look well with yours.  I have a few favorites, the most commonly used consist of white shirt plus navy/white dots, navy/widely spaced narrow yellow repp stripes (Trinity College colors, basically), or something in madras.

Although the spirit of the event will be summery, I am interested particularly in combinations that will perhaps not win Internet "GTH" contests but will, in fact, look good.

Re: Your favorite tie with seersucker (for those who wear it)

Does anyone else here tire of this pattern of new threads:

I have a question.  While asking that question, I'm going to denigrate Ask Andy.  What do you think about my question?  Make sure your answer isn't like what they would suggest at Ask Andy.

Just ask your question.  If everyone is so much better at FNB, you won't get any lurid Ask Andy-like suggestions.

To the question:  I wear mostly stripes with seersucker, and I often keep the colors on the dark side.  I find it's a nice contrast to the light seersucker and a white shirt (which I wear almost exclusively).  I have a BB#1 in maroon with gold and navy stripes that I think looks good. Also Argyle & Sutherland, and navy and maroon based emblematics.

Re: Your favorite tie with seersucker (for those who wear it)

I like a medium to dark tie with a seersucker suit. It can be a print but not a light color or "summer" fabric such as linen or that puckered silk meant to look like a seersucker tie. However, a raw or shantung silk in those stripes J. Press makes is OK, the Indian madder ones, as long as, you guessed it, they are dark.

I would think school ties or club ties are especially traditional with this look, including heraldics and emblematics.

Why a dark tie? To avoid looking like you sell icecream and to make the outfit more like a summer version of what a serious man would wear as a summer alternative rather than one who has thrown all caution to the winds.

Even a bowtie is OK, as long as it's dark. Light bowties go better with darker summer weight suits.

I actually find that shirts are toughest to select with seersucker aside from a handful of obvious ones. I think probably solid colors are best, blue, white, pink, yellow, peach. Button downs with button cuffs are a natural choice but as long as the shirt has some texture like twill, summer pinpoint, pinpoint or full blown oxford cloth  even a spread collar and double cuffs is passable (not with the heaviest oxford cloth); again a spread collar and french cuffs prevents the look from being too flouncy.Oddly a chambray shirt can work. I saw someone with a grey and white seersucker last summer wearing a  salmon pink chambray shirt with white collar and cuffs and it looked suprisingly good.

I think with the grey and white version black shoes are alright. Brown shoes in any shade from darkest brown to chestnut, and in suede from darkest brown to white bucks; black and white spectators are a perfect choice for this suit.

I also like to wear an Argyle and Sutherland with my blue/white seersucker suit. Other choices: gold/navy stripe, Brooks no.1 light blue/navy blue stripe, burgundy/navy stripe and red/navy stripe. The gold/navy stripe from Brooks Brothers is my favorite to wear.

We've heard that a million monkeys at a million keyboards could produce the complete works of Shakespeare; now, thanks to the Internet, we know that is not true.

Horace, agree:  when paired with a blazer, white shirt and gray trousers, one runs the rist of looking like the security guard.  Doesn't stop me though.

Edit:  Sorry my attempt to upload a picture did not work.  It's the repp with large alternating green and navy stripes, with narrow stripes of red and yellow in between.

Re: Your favorite tie with seersucker (for those who wear it)

Great input men, thanks.

T to B, I see now what the Argyle and Sutherland is.  I do have one, never thought of trying it with seersucker.

I think the general suggestion of going dark is a good one.

Terry the navy knit is a really good idea, I hadn't thought of that.  And of course, Lax, blue and gold ( = the blue and yellow I had mentioned as one of my favs) is a great choice, I may just go with that.

The madder and churchill dot ideas are intriguing as well.

Agree on the nix on yellow...I think the only one that might work without looking like I should be playing Tiger Rag on my trombone is possibly yellow with navy dots, but I have decided against that and will be going with something darker.

A lot of people go all out for this dance/party and like to look a little silly, as in Lily type jackets or the loud pants.  I thought about this route, but I want to be fun and summery (seersucker) yet a little bit more grown up (darker, not too silly tie).

So very good suggestions all around, both for this and for wearing same suit to the office.

If there are some good pictures I might post one...thanks again for your suggestions.

Re: Your favorite tie with seersucker (for those who wear it)

I kinda like it.  Makes a bit of sense considering he was a surrealist painter.  And i think the stripe on stripe with dots looks much better than those shirts some men wear nowadays, with 14 different color stripes that a vertical on the shirt and diagonal on the placket, often worn with too-big pinstripe jackets.  If the pants were striped too i'd say it would be too much.  But i can see your point.  Maybe if the tie were solid, the stripe on stripe wouldnt be so jarring.
