a) how do you know so much about our friend? stalking him? smile

b) law from oxford! why on earth has he chosen to become a journalist and part time blogger then? I would have thought coming out of oxford with a law degree you would be able to fairly easily secure articles at of the barristers chambers in London or get into one of the big corporate law firms .. the amount those bastards charge he would be able to afford as many huntsman tweeds as he wanted!

Re: Is Simon Crompton the new Francis Bown?

yes, certainly is bizarre. that's why good style writers are a rare breed, ones who 'authentically' wear bespoke tailored clothing and are still in a profession which pays in monkey nuts is somewhat incongruent. I read nick foulkes' style column in the online FT .. I don't think he freeloads from places and am sure he has his own independent means as he only goes to a handful of places which he has gone to for 20 or 30 years (I know as I go to some of the same places). his lifestyle is also out of line with likely income (as I've also seen him in a couple of places in mayfair/kensington which are quite expensive especially if you are paying out of your own pocket (I was being entertained as a client). foulkes' books cant be generating a lot of income as they seem to be on rather arcane historical biographies or on some luxury brands history and so on. I like the guys taste though although its perhaps a little outré.

Re: Is Simon Crompton the new Francis Bown?

what a terrible advert for PPE at oxford .. seems its a great degree to practise sophistry as a politican in the UK and now it seems also qualifies you to become a 'blogger'. how embarrassing for all concerned.

Ah I suddenly realise why it's not such a strange choice of career for old compie ..

you are of course right that PPE is the default requirement for the modern career politican in the UK .. you see perhaps what the degree really equips you to become is a total hoho  .. which explains everything.

I actually think Crompie's advice is sound in this case.

Re: Is Simon Crompton the new Francis Bown?

As the owner of a website that trades on the number of eyeballs I suspect he's looking for the broadest possible readership.  And I don't see that the acquisition "approach" to his own wardrobe prevents him from writing about shopping for clothes on a budget.  In fact, I'd guess that there are many readers of this (and other forums and blogs) who are on a budget but nonetheless like to read about more expensive, aspirational clobber... human nature I think.

Re: Is Simon Crompton the new Francis Bown?

Fair point… no idea of the veracity, or otherwise, of the posts on his website but it must be tricky keeping up a regular stream of posts on a fairly narrow subject.  I think Will at ASW does a decent job of this with the guest writers - although inevitably there's only so much you can write about bloke's clothing.

Re: Is Simon Crompton the new Francis Bown?

comps has just posted :

'Pleasures and problems with Passaggio Cravatte' ... I reckon this will blow a hole in their business, as looking at the new set up the business seems to be targeted squarely at the international iGent online. As an equity research guy I would assume this will knock a good 20 to 30% of revenues out this year.

Wonder what caused such an 'anti editorial' to be written?

Re: Is Simon Crompton the new Francis Bown?

Oldfruit1 - I spotted that, too.

It would surely be hugely wide of the mark to suggest that the great man was refused a freebie and had a fit of pique as a result. I wonder why he seems disproportionately annoyed, though. Perhaps they refused to "collaborate" with him on a club tie...

I seem to remember that someone mentioned before that Mr.C seems willing to put the boot into smaller companies but shies away from criticising the larger ones?
