I'm of different opinion.

Letting people know you exist and soliciting feedback on your work is not advertising. Discussing what you do in your work is also not a sales activity. Posting a picture with a caption of: "Only $X through 07/15. Call 1 (800) HIR-EMEE" is an express interest to sell.

RE: Credentials & Licenses. I am inclined to agree. Creds simply register that someone is minimally trained and made mistakes in a supervised and controlled environment. It is not a guarantee for future outcomes. The defect in the Cred system is that a degree earned with a C is printed on the same paper as one earned with an A.

Haven't posted in weeks, but this thread is too delicious to not contribute.  In no particular order:

2) Shooman, your claim that Andy kicked you out of AA because he wanted you to write an article on shoe construction and you didn't is scandalous, crazy, and simply impossible to believe.  I laughed out loud at the mere insinuation.  It actually calls into question everything you have ever posted because it is so fantastical and outlandish.  On the other hand, you posted one of those crazy death photos that you used to post on AA, so all is forgiven -- you never cease to amaze me!

3) Will simply would not exaggerate or embellish his story re: Beaman.  He got screwed 100% and I echo the earlier comment that, if anything, he is seriously, seriously holding back.  Darren, if you didn't screw Will and run off with his hard-earned cash, tell your side of the story.  Tell us how it was a misunderstanding that you never game him a respectable, Finnish suit.  In the meantime, Will, it would be a waste of precious time to write a long story about Darren's crookery (it has been so well-documented that I can't even believe we're talking about it right now), but if doing so would prevent further cheatings, do it.

Now then, to respond to FNB's points:

1) We do not live in a credential-obsessed society.  Far from it.  Look at the Rich Dad, Poor Dad guy, Robert Kiyosaki.  He has made millions on top of millions on top of millions selling a story about getting rich the way he got rich, when not a scrap of evidence exists regarding his assets before he went into the useless book-writing/seminar-speaking business. 

Also, I am in the PE business.  The bloated world of PE has among its ranks Princeton undergrad/Harvard MBA types galore, but believe me: we also have no-name undergrad/no MBA guys running very well-respected shops and nobody asks any questions.  Institutional investors who care about such things would often times be walking away from serious returns, and they just don’t operate like that. 

2)  Does posting a jacket or shirt one has made constitute advertising?  Yes.  If we had a regular user named “BrooksBrothers” who constantly logged on and posted pics of all manner of sack suit and woolen trouser, we’d say that he were advertising.  Running a one-man tailoring shop is no different.  It’s advertising.

FNB, the fact that you have allowed negative comments about Darren’s work is important because it counteracts the advertising and gives the other side of the story.

Darren’s side: look at me, I make great suits and coats!

The other side: Darren does a great job of dressing mannequins, but he took us for a ride, so if you want to pay a couple grand for an unfinished product with a fused collar attached, all aboard.

Darren, it looks like you’re back at it.  That could be a good thing...if you carefully calculated all the money you owed all of your past customers, made the proper disbursements, and then rebuilt your business in an honest way.  Simply coming out from under a rock and saying “look at me, unlined sport coat!” is not helping the situation.
