Fair enough.
Fashion can be an accent for a man but not the main focus. Accent as in novelty of necktie, seasonal color, or fresh interpretation of a staple bit of clothing.
Fashion can act as a way to be a contrarion. For example, if bold stripes are out of fashion, wear them more to stand out.
Sometimes you have to impress people you dont like. It can also be used to impress people you might like.
We dont need any of the clothes we buy except as a means to be the star in the film of our life populated by constructs.
'In words, as fashions, the same rule will hold;
Alike fantastic, if too new, or old:
Be not the first by whom the new are tried,
Nor yet the last to lay the old aside.'
(Alex. Pope).
'The well-dressed man is he whose clothes you never notice.'
W. Somerset Maugham
Fashion is dead, at least the outer reaches of it, that's why the kids are so plain these days.
I'm not scared to be fashionable, you look as big a dork in a Zoot suit as you do in a O'Connells sack jacket. A fashionable cut or colour is nothing to be ashamed of.
I like the look of a good DB suit. But like hard high 3 button suits its hard to get right OTR/RTW. Almost required to be bespoke or MTM. And like formby I think its restricted in that it MUST be always buttoned up - makes it impractical. I don't have any now. I'm not sure I've ever seen a good looking DB odd a jacket in the wild - I'm sure its possible but ..... they are even more impractical as an odd jacket - being done up all the time. My mate has a lot of DB suits, a lot - he wears them undone - I don't approve - but I must say he doesn't look all that bad - then again hes 6'3" and skinny.
Is this the place to say I used to have an earing? I took it out as soon as others started wearing them.
Fashion is quite ok as long as you don't become a slave to it. I've never worn monk straps and I never will. I just don't like them. I have worn things that I like that became very fad, when they're "out" of fashion I've found them unwearable for quite a few years. I think the way to go is not to take fashion to its extremes, fitted is cool, skinny fitted and to short makes me cringe.
