I'll be darned...how wonderfully quaint. Reminds me of ration books, the blitz, the train journey from Waterloo to North Wales in that warm spring in 1940, when we stayed with Mr & Mrs. Jones on their sheep farm.

...when my brother, Albert and I returned to London in September 1944 I remember my mother was waiting to meet us off the train with her American friend, Johnny his name was.
"My" she said, "I'll be darned if you haven't shot up boys, must be all that fresh air you've been getting and look at you Goodyear, in long pants".
I remember that because I'd only ever heard Americans say darned in the Aberystwyth Odeon on Saturday morning matinee shows. I also remember Johnny had some chewing gum.
Well I'll be....
I hear the F word quite a bit. I'd have to say Americans utilize the F word far more than other English speaking countries. It's always F this, or F that, or what the F?, or F you. I can't slip up and say that around my parents without still getting an "oh shit" feeling.
The first time I heard the F word was when my father returned from Germany and found Johnny sitting in his chair by the fire with Albert on his lap reading to him from The Secret Five Go Camping. I was really shocked because he'd gone missing in action somewhere in Africa in 1942. I've still got Johnnys wash and wear Brooks sack jacket somewhere.

The feral camels of Australia fascinate me. So do Australians. I had an exchange teacher in junior high from Melbourne. What a grand teacher of biology. He told us how Australians knock on doors with their knees cause their hands were full with beer. What American would say that to 13 year olds? Fuck yeah, Mr. Morgan.
Haha...that must have been it. It was years ago. We did love that guy.
Interesting thread. It's always entertaining to see how other others view one's own country. Puts some things in an all new perspective. This being my first post here, I haven't yet quite figured out what this forum is all about. I take it most you folks here are Brits. I came here thinking this was a forum about film noir, but but it seems there is very little of that here. I guess classic style is more in order, which is fine by me. I'm a long-time member of the Fedora Lounge and a fan of all things Golden Age.
