request:: Galoshes

I know it probably unfashionable but is it possible to buy, sensible, utilitarian, black, cheap and cheerful galoshes in UK?

Edit:: sorry I'm aware they are available but have no way of distinguishing between expensive "designer" type ones and the acceptable everyday ones.

Re: request:: Galoshes

As it happens I just purchased a pair of these from Amazon.  They seem to fit ok over all my shoes, including the chunky ones, but I've yet to try them in action (i.e. in the rain).  I was surprised how expensive they are, but there seems to be little choice and competition in the galosh market.

Re: request:: Galoshes

Galoshes seem more obvious than a manmade sole for inclement weather. After, all, aren't leather uppers just as liable to damage as leather soles, after prolonged exposure to water? For this reason, I have considered galoshes a number of times over the years. As I can get away with wearing Red Wings (work boots) to work (how appropriate) I haven't felt the necessity to invest; however I may finally try some at some point.

For those who are old enough to have been around back in the day, i.e. when most men wore real shoes every day: were galoshes ubiquitous?

To be honest its not the damage to the sole but the grip that leads me to rubber soles. But for a city shoe they of course make sense.

Re: request:: Galoshes

I used to wear them over school shoes when I was a kid. I'm sure they were cheap. They don't seem avaible here except as expensive orange designer things. I've always had a nostalgic and practical yearning for a pair.

If you've spent a bit on Galoshes by swims or someone such like. You might wanna buy a cheap pair of shitty shoes to wear over them in bad weather.

Re: request:: Galoshes

swims are the go.

I also bought a pair of vintage galoshes that are designed like a pair of 1950s shoes.

Not enough rain to wear either this year in Sydney but Bleak City might give you more opportunity to use them fxh. ("laughs uproariously")

Re: request:: Galoshes

I didn't think about the fact that it was raining this morning and made the mistake of going out in leather soled shoes. Large areas in London have polished flagstones which are lethal. The South Bank is particularly dodgy. So there I was at 07:00 shuffling along like one of those Japanese gheisha women who have force their feet into wooden shoes that are too small for their feet. Meanwhile young office girls were striding past in their trainers probably thinking that I was a 'rasberry'.

There you go, I worked in racism, sexism and disablism all in one post about galoshes.
