you know, no one here has ever acknowledged the enormous influence of the movies from the 30s and 40s on the way we dress. I submit the claim that the influence was extraordinary. There are many here that think they buy their clothes direct from Saville Row. But I wonder.
I think the real American style Icons came from the movies. Coop, Bogie, Tracey, Gable. I think they had far more influence than any English tailor. Classic fahion today, that is idolized on this site, comes from LA in the 1930s far more than England. Like the first line of the Godfather Part I: I believe in America!

Don't forget William Powell in all of those fabulous "Thin Man" films from the '30's-'40's!!!
Now that you mention it, I think we're more influenced by that period of Hollywood, too, though many Anglophiles would balk and blanch at the mere suggestion. Probably Orry-Kelly, Edith Head and Travis Banton had more to do with those looks than any Savile Row tailor.

PS: Fred Astaire. The music , the fashion. It all came from the movies. Deny it if you want. Every men's clothing site today owes it's existance to the classic movies of the 1930s. you don't know it. but now you know it.
Thin Man: William Powell, forgotten today, But the star of Stars. Myrna Loy: she wrote a book. still appeared in some forgettable movie in the late 1970s. Myrna Loy: May I say: woof!
