Need advice on accessing science journals (OFF TOPIC)

There are certain science journals l need to access that l can't get online unless l pay big fees. I can't get them at a university unless l am a member of staff or a student with a special I.D log on. What do you suggest l do?

Re: Need advice on accessing science journals (OFF TOPIC)

shooey the whole academic publishing industry is a nonsnes in terms of $ - public monies pay for most research and yet articles can cost up to $40 each and subscriptions to Journals are prohibitive.

Most local  libraries have an arrangement where you can login with your library card to access those journals which are online. If your library doesn't have one you can join any library in Victoria free just by signing up.

You can use university libraries if you go there in person - some will have hard copies of journals.

Get a friend who is a student or better a staff member of a university to get you stuff.

Often an abstract is enough.

The other trick is to get the abstract and use google or google scholar to search for a precise sentence - you'll be surprised how often someone has placed a journal article online in full.

Search the authors - many many authors place their papers online.

If all else fails and you really want the whole paper then email the authors -and ask - most will be happy to send you a full .pdf copy.

Depends on the name of the Journals you are after - not all places subscribe - other places like hospitals and research places have some journals.

Depending what you are after - email me with names of articles and journals. I might be able to help.

Tread very carefully, Shooey. Many of these librarians are Knights of Malta or Knights of the Round Table or Lizard People or even Illuminati or Wash Basins.

Why not stick with research on Youtube? Someone told me that as long you wore copper bracelets and daisy chains around your neck and never swallowed apple pips, you'd be safe.

Barring that, take WMs advice and get a girlfriend.

Shooey:
I do a lot of research. Google Scholar is essential. Some references are available as PDF documents that you can print out. As for the other ones that are restricted you have 2 options.
A) print out the abstract and take it to the local library. they can get it for you. After you get to know the librarian you can start doing the whole thing via email.
B) get an online subscription through your library. When you log in from home there will be a secondary process through your library to gain access thru their website (you will need the library's assistance on this). This is the preferred way as when you do the Google Scholar thing the journal will think you are the library and grant you access to the article.
Get to know the librarian, they are flabbergasted somebody is actually curious about what they do and if you show an interest in science journals instead of porn or downloading music or movies, they'll bring the world of publications to your feet.

Not sure if I would be any help,  but when I graduated from my school they allowed alumni to retain access to the electronic journals.

I never looked at what scientific journals or articles are available, so I don't know if i would have access to what you need. I know I have access to classical studies and philology journals. Pages and pages of scintillating arguments on the meanings of hapax legomena.

From the pyramid structure I can only assume it has a Masonic/illuminati subtext?
