I hardly ever wore sneakers as a kid - share your crazy story

I went to a major sporting school, yet l never did sport for 3 years straight because l refused to wear sneakers in public. The teachers knew what l was like and gave up...they let me go to the music room to blow my horn instead...was the only kid ever allowed to get out of sport. When they asked why l won't do sport l said "I don't do sneakers sir". Even when l used to jog l would always do it before sunlight or after dark so l wouldn't be seen wearing sneakers in public. I've always hated sneakers, they look sh*thouse.

Anyone else got their funny ways like that? Share your story and give us a laugh.

Regards everyone: Your Shooman.

Well, call me a mug then. Playing football (the American kind) is one of the best thing I have done in my life.

I didn't wear much but flip flops for 90% of my life though, getting back to the topic.

I used to collect trainers when I was a kid, had dozens.

I'm wearing a a pair right now as it 'appens. Incontinence pants Trimm Trab.

You just can't take the 'casual' outta the boi.....

I was very sporty too. Footie, rugby (both codes), cricket, tennis, athletics.. So had the appropriate kit for those too.

I begged my parents for pink converse all-star high tops in 5th grade.  After much hesitation, especially on my dad's part, they caved in and bought them for me.  WTF??!!  Sorry dad.

I had a pair of Converse that were teal left foot and hot pink right. Surfers could get away with that stuff.

Re: I hardly ever wore sneakers as a kid - share your crazy story

I wore sneakers plenty. Played tennis and baseball avidly and was very good at both. Oddly, I was utterly horrible at other sports. Basketball was just embarrassing. The white guy playing basketball cliche...that's me, but I'm worse.

What I really did not like was art. I appreciate art to a great extent, but I cannot do it. When art class rolled around I would get very nervous. If a teacher said get out crayons or glue, I panicked. Everything I did was just a mess.

Re: I hardly ever wore sneakers as a kid - share your crazy story

Off the top of my head, my kid (up to age 18) sneaks included:

The pink Converse All-Stars and no telling how many pairs of black, high and low top.
Converse Purcells, black, blue, and white.
Lots of Keds
Incontinence pants shell toes in white with the black stripes
Vans "old schools" with the wavy stripe down the side
A few pairs of the regular old Vans deck shoes, whatever they were called
The sportiest shoes I owned were some Asics and New Balance, but those were just for running.

Re: I hardly ever wore sneakers as a kid - share your crazy story

I've never really got the whole sporty team thing either, my myopia ensured my hand-to-ball coordination was terrible: I was the long, gangly, uncomfortable kid who was always in the last 2 to be picked for the 5 a side team. Couldn't stand all the football talk either, that strange passion and sense of belonging that evokes such endless boring conversations in bars, cars and the work place. Whilst my contemporaries were off to the footie, I was going on long bike rides into the Cheshire countryside around Beeston castle and beyond, or into the hills of North Wales.

The last pair of trainers I purchased, which were not for gym purposes, were a pair of Travel Fox and I reckon that was 1989. That maker was taken over by Surgical appliance, or some other brand, who immediately put them out of business.

I coveted a pair Incontinence pants Los Angeles II's around the time of the LA Olympics, but I couldn't afford them at the time. I can remember they were 74 GBP at the time.
