I don't think that Slade were better than Led Zep. Actually, they were a joke of a band. But that's what I like about them, they did not take themselves seriously and I like their silly chants better than the pompous progressive blues rock jams of the four demi-gods.
Pomp and circumstance ftw. Those boys were demi gods. It was awesome.
Thousands, maybe millions of kids would form bands after listening to Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, Bo Diddley, Coasters, Kinks or Rolling Stones, playing Louie, Louie or Gloria...
But after the likes of Cream and Hendrix appeared and Sgt Peppers and the Piper at the Gates of Dawn were out, that stopped. People didn't form bands anymore and just had fun. They stood in awe, admired their supernatural heroes and appreciated the virtuosity and the hair and all the gimmicks...
and what was cool in jazz wasn't necessarily cool in rock.
Jazz was ruined around the same time, I think, just about after Coltrane's death. Not much love for fusion or jazz funk or all this academic jazz.
Most blues and country also went down the toilet with a few exceptions, like RL Burnside, Loretta Lynn or Hound Dog Taylor and the House Rockers.
some purists go even further and blame the Beatles for ruining rock'n'roll with their sophisticated songwriting, their quaint English melodies, all these middle eights and gimmicks...
There was some really good country in the late '60s.
I don't know I think this is all a bit silly link wrays self titled album from 1971 is a masterpiece. Headhunters by Herbert Hancock. There's been tons of great music produce passed my preferred period and although I might not like it as much just because something was produce after a cut off point makes it no worse. Problem is when we gave into rigid drum tracks from machines and automation loosing groove and feel in rhythm IMO.
I'm not saying I won't listen to anything after mid-sixties. I do like plenty of things outside the era as well; Russell hit on quite a few himself. It's just MOST of what I like is really stuff from the big band era to about '65. I'm not a man of exclusions.

Sums up my tastes. Seems to be pretty out of vogue around here though.
McCartney and The Stones are battling it out for a Grammy in the best rock song category.

Did you ever get into the Dwarves, doggie?
I just recall them, along with the Superuckers, being the really depraved out-there offerings in my Sub Pop catalogs when I was like 14 years old. I was more into Codeine... the band. But I had a Dwarves album I really liked. Had naked chicks covered in blood on the cover or something.
