Andrea Galer is an award-winning film costumer and designer, who has projects up and running concerned in general with perpetuating skills and trades related to the making of clothes (specifically including lace-making in Sri Lanka).
By the way, I have recently discovered that Andrea envisioned, cut and built the original 'Withnail' coat herself and, later on, Davies & Son (with whom she has often worked), made a replica for publicity purposes.
There are two internet sites which explain what she is doing in her projects. This is one:-
http://www.andreagaler.co.uk/ag-films/two-worlds-2008-narrated-by-julie-christie.html
The other is the site of her charitable foundation and I will put up a link later.
Anyone interested in her projects and making suggestions for them can contact her direct through the sites or, if you prefer, you can liaise with me as I have a reasonably clear idea of her objective. Broadly speaking it is to make a film through a major television or film company on the topics mentioned above. The 'short' The Two Worlds, on the above site, narrated by Julie Christie, gives some idea of the quality of the film that Andrea wants to produce.
Just in case certain people are reading this, there will be no blagging freebies of free Sri-Lankan lace.
I remember watching Withnail and I when it first came out, back in '87. Very, very popular with students, many could quote the film's dialogue in its entirety. There was also a drinking game too. Jesus, good times...good times.
There are lots of costume makers still in the UK, there are several still in Manchester because of the studios. Mrs F had her wedding dress made by one. It was a near copy of her grandmothers, which she had made herself in an Art Deco style. An exquisite thing, that had become to fragile to wear. Her grandmother was a tailoress who specialised in women's tailoring.
There was, also a tailor in Manchester, a Cypriot who used to make the clothes for the leads, he was often at the Studio's doing fittings. He was also the late Les Dawson's tailor.
I say was, he may still be around...
