Censorship 2.0

On April 6th 1933 the Main Office for Press and Propaganda of the German Student Union proclaimed an action against "Ungerman spirit". An action which would prepare book burnings throughout Germany.

"Against class warfare and materialism, for the community of the people and an idealistic way of life!

"Against decadence and moral degeneracy, for decency and custom in family and government!

"I consign to the flames the writings of...

Marx and Kautsky, Heinrich Mann, Tucholsky, Kerr, Gläser, Heine... Also books by French, American, English and Russian authors such as Hugo, Hemingway, Conrad and Dostoyevsky were burned.

A spectacular action! It won't be such a spectacle in 2033.

When the German Minister for Decency and Religion wants to file a complaint against a disagreeable author, he can simply inform the German consul in Seattle, and the title can be deleted from the Kindle library.

Sounds like a dystopian horror vision?

Well, Apple iBooks has already censored the word "sperm" from its descriptions of "Moby Dick" in 2010.

Yes, the naughty word filter would only allow the word "s***m whale", though, apparently there was no problem with the title of the book.

This example sounds funny, and it's easy to write it off as a mistake but technically, censorship is pretty easy to do as the Big Firewall in China shows. Google does not only block a search for Tianmen Square but also for the date (6/4/89).

Re: Censorship 2.0

When I was in Beijing one time I stayed in a hotel in the Mongolian quarter, arranged from a group by the local Beijing Cultural Commissioner or something,  owned and run by the Independent People Region of Mongolia or some such name. Some parts were amazing as it was at least 10 years behind even the most hidebound Beijing enterprises.

I used the "Business Centre"  at one stage. It was a forlorn room with about 6 computers and a  small office with window and no door overlooking. With 3, yes 3, bored looking "helpers". They were always there and full time from what I could see in uniform. They were initially very thrown when I appeared, clearly they don't get many foreign devils and their English was non existent in speaking terms.

Initially the net was flowing slow but ok and I was getting through with mail and etc. Then it slowed to almost stop - and Google was blocked. Each day I used it. Once I managed to sneak a look around at what the staff were doing. Sure enough they were looking - on their monitors - at my pages I had opened.

The rest of the time almost no one seemed to use the room and the 3 staff were playing games on the PCs and looking at Hello Kitty stuff.

Another time I stayed at a small hutoung hotel with 6 rooms in a courtyard and a owner who had been a student in Melbourne. The net there was lightning fast and clearly bypassed all censorship as I could access anything I wanted - USA site on Tiananmen Square  incident etc etc. Seems to me, probably as expected, it depends on how tech savvy and how "official" you are.

Yes, it's probably the people and their prudishness and their general stupidity and all their/ our other unpleasant features, that we have to fear, not technology itself...

That's a startling account FXH.
