Sometimes Italians over egg it but its on the things that shouldnt even bother to look beautiful they really succeed.  I used to have to use a 1950s italian leather skiver at my old job. The thing was beautiful. And in such an amazing pearlescent greeny blue colour. An absolute joy to behold

Formby - I take your general point but there is some great british design (great britain - get it?) how about the early Jaguar car, The Mini (car and skirt), Mary Quant, hell at the risk of starting a forum war - The Mods ffs, the lounge suit - geez modern mens wear in general - and thats a list without thinking.

Re: What Makes Italy So Stylish.....or Not!

How many of you travel to Italy on a regular basis? More than once per year?

Italy and the Italians are not stylish per se. What the igents drool over is just a tiny fraction of the whole country. And today you can find similar groups like the Pity Uomo people (mostly homosexual or metersexual men who care too much about clothing and dream that buying stuff and dressing the party will make them members of a sociodemographic class they look up to) in any other European country.

Most parts of Italy are very shabby, and the people have simple tastes and ways of living. As in "plastic water bottles on the dinner table in a restaurant" or "Pizza Würstel" (pizza with Wiener Würstchen, a staple in the Lakes region). Average income is low, and the normal people (= what Simon Compton and this mini Asian guy and all the other blogger-jounalist-foodie-philiosopher-freelancers are) buy their clothes in outlet malls or, in case of the picturesque Cannobio, from a lorry at the Sunday market in the village square.

I like this simplicity very much. But it is not a rustic, patinated and photo-worthy simplicity.

Before, the Americans turned up in dad jeans and white sneakers. Soon they will show uo in Luigi's Granddad's clothes, out-sprezzaturing the locals (who, by default, prefer small Renaults to Piaggio Apes).

Yes, some very grand designs and designers come from Italy. The reality in daily life has nothing to do with the wankbooks of the Igentry.
