I doesn't really exist that way in the US. Taste is pretty evenly distributed amongst all socioeconomic backgrounds. Emphasis on the economic part. There's not as much deviation and delineation in the socio part of our society.

Yeah. And a lot of our design, art, vocational and technical schools are just degree stores. Pay the tuition and half ass it and get out with a degree in fashion or furniture "design".
Not to mention the love of the Italians for Eurodisco.
Acutally, even when they are tacky (Foxtown, Pizza Würstel, plastic bottle on table, Avicii blaring from the speakers in Ferragamo boutique) they are cool.
Only the American tourists are utterly disappointed.

Italian style transcended the Iron Curtain:

This is actually well known to me, being married (in a civil partnership) to an ex-Soviet Union Russkie: they were well nourished with Italian film and music throughout the 70s and 80s. It was ultimate glamour for them.
That last Labour government have got a lot to answer for....
There is undeniable nuclear expertise in the UK and also in a lot of engineering disciplines and manufacturing, that you remind us of, in our darkest moments, Formby!
Sorry, yes, Finland it is!
Didn't the Romans introduce baths and washing into Britain?
Do you think it will eventually catch on?
There is something repellent to me about Italian "glamour". I wouldn't even restrict it to Italian, but just "glamour" in general. Maybe I am just too much of an American bumpkin to appreciate it. Bespoke clothes, BMWs, thousand dollar dinners, all abhorrent to me.
Living in New York is often distressing. Luxury is the word but no one stops to think that so called luxury goods are flaunted about by the wives of fireman and bankers alike. Big diamonds rest on the fingers of school teachers. It's all a waste to me.
