I've just purchased some Alden's with the double water lock sole and my question is how good and durable are they in the wet?
The soles are treated with oil to resist the moisture, but is it only the surface which after some time at street level will wear away exposing the untreated leather.
These from the website:

Pthh. What about the water getting between the welt and upper? Alden must think we are dumber than cows. Yeah, the water may not go through the outsole, but it still could get in the insole and take that gemming off and bugger the shoe.
Double water lock sole = maybe for outsole
Water lock sole = not guaranteed for the most important part, the insole.
4F, nice looking shoo.
Well, I like the way they look Hep.
I've got them on now, they look mega!
Meanwhile, in my research on the properties of the water lock sole, I have discovered that "The Official Alden Thread" over on Style Forum is up to page 5337! That's a lot of entries by iGents to sift through to find any worthwhile information and facts on the quality of the double lock sole.
Sounds a daunting and tedious task.
Shooey, I've. Probably read this some where , but how about Norwegian welt/ stitch? And what did the early artic explorers and Everest mountaineers use?
They look decent. I'm a big smooths fan, although I don't presently own any. I think those are the only smooths in brown Alden do, except for a pair that are made for LE and don't have proper sizing (despite being full price). (Or the ones I'm thinking of may be Allen Edmonds; I can't recall.)
