Could someone please explain how we ended up with the House of Hanover and why Germans have such an influence over the upper middle class and upper classes?
Looking through some family tress of recent it seems that you can't escape the German tie-ins with influential people and royal blood lines coming from both angles.
I thought we were ruled by technocrats from Brussels and then after they've drank that town dry, they move to Strasbourg to do the same there?
That may very well be the case. But ironically that involved a vote. Well apart from that's not what was voted for.
We ended up with krauts on the throne because our last Stuart monarch (Queen Anne - actually, remember, a Scottie by descent, from Mary Queen of Scots), had no heirs and the bovine George of Hanover, a great hater of "bainters and boets" was the nearest in line who was a decent protty and not a left-footer.
I should have thought that, after WWI and WWII, the Windsors have convincingly shed their kraut heritage and become Brits. Apart from all that, I do not see that the krauts are all that influential on British society at any level: still mildly suspected as there are still many alive of whom one might inquire: "What did your family do in the War?"
But, anyway don't let's be beastly to the Germans.
Yes there is indeed some question of that with the very family I'm researching.
There are supposedly 2.2 million Brits living in various EU countries, so as Germany has the largest european population it's a fair bet that quite a few of them are here in the UK. There is also the small matter that Germany is the richest country in the EU and that anything worthwhile in this country tends to have been sold to foreigners by our upper and upper middle classes who are largein' it up on the proceeds whilst the rest of us slowly slip downhill on a smear of borrowed money.
I've come across a couple of sons of Nazis who fled to Brazil.
Speaking as a Celt you Anglo Saxons are all German anyway,so whats all the fuss about?
Sorry Formby i tried to reply to you and accidentally deleted your mail (damn these mod powers)
In answer to your tracing your Irish grandparents.
Are you refering to official or private records? The official records being destroyed in a fire is a bit of a myth actually Ireland was the most heavily censured country in the British empire (more so than England).
Unfortunately a lot of those were pulped by the British Government in their infinite wisdom
However the online census for Ireland are free to use and go back to 1901.All you need is a town or county ,other than that its church records ,which i have done and it is hard work.
Uruguay was the one I was thinking of.
