A Dork would be intelligent but socially awkward. A numpty is of low IQ and easily lead.

Re: On Cool. was "Looks"

Just did a quick read through Questlove's essay, which does offer interesting and salient points regarding the concept of cool as it relates to our discussion here.

Smoking, something that was ultimately cool for decades, is also now under attack as something uncool.

Yes, spongy and fluid. I was hitting at that earlier.

Re: On Cool. was "Looks"

Here's a link to the Questlove essay on the death of black cool that Bop cited.  Whaddayaknow.... a picture of Miles Davis front and center.  He interestingly (and probably no surprise) has already touched on some of the things we've also touched on, but worth a read.

Love the culmination of preppy ennui, dance/techno, and hip hop in the chart up there FXH.  Goes a long way in explaining why I hate everything.

Ironically post-cool is not about being cool, because that's not cool. And if you're trying not to be cool that's not cool either.

Re-watched Pimpernel Smith (1941) today, after Hep mentioned it - wonderful film -and consider the circumstances in which it was made! Smith's disappearance at the end, leaving only a cloud of cigarette smoke, is absolutely terrific smile

Bump for Leslie Howard, who seems more than any other, to embody that English sangfroid-coolness.
