Odd shirts vs. week-long collections

I prefer to have 5 shirts of the same kind so I can have the same shirt on for a whole working week.

So I have 5 H&K white kent collar ones, 5 with spread collar, 5 sky blue, 5 end on end.

I have a few odd shirts, i.e. one bengal, one mini bengal etc. That makes me uncomfortable.

What would YOU do?

Tell me about your shirt strategy,

"Strategy" is a new one. I am just getting used to a " rotation".

I just wear what takes my fancy. Some stuff gets little usage like Harvey and Hudson footballer stripes. They are really nice shirts but for some reason they just sit in the wardrobe.

I do not much care for horrible checks worn with a suit. Thankfully, this seems to be going out of fashion. Tattersall I am OK with for odd jackets. Gingham is fine too.

Re: Odd shirts vs. week-long collections

Depends on the shirt: but bold whites, OCBD blues and plains, I like to buy three at a time. If it's more unique, plaids, tartans or micro-checks, I will only ever buy one. I am pretty much a button-down and sports coat man, I only need to wear suits at weddings, funerals and court appearances, in which case I will sport a spread collar. But otherwise no.

As for a strategy of wearing, perhaps because I've been around people who would actually wear the same shirt several days in the row, I will try and wear a different colour or fabric of shirt each day. But then again, its been hot and muggy here for the last couple of weeks and despite air conditioning offices, I've been going for primarily white and microcheck broadcloths with some pink and pink candy stripes thrown in.

Some people like to wear the same thing a lot. Brian Sewell at the time of the Anthony Blunt revelations springs to mind.

To me, it seems a bit obsessive. Arkirshner of Ask Andy probably has strong views on this, one way or another.

If there was a "rule" he would almost certainly be aware of it.

Wearing the same thing a lot is not a bad thing. Eventually one has found out what looks good.

I once overdosed on Turnbull & Asser stripes and went into recovery by wearing whites, exclusively, for over two years. I quite enjoyed the quiet time. smile

Re: Odd shirts vs. week-long collections

Some people like colourful shirts, checked or striped, others like plain shirts. Fine, I like all three. My personnel preference is for checks though.

Plain shirts can be a nice backdrop to a colourful tie and/or suit.

Wearing colourful suits/shirts/ties together can look visually appealing but takes considerable skill to execute well. It needs, for want of a better term, a serendipitous quality to avoid it looking too studied, too feminine.

Re: Odd shirts vs. week-long collections

My problem is that I'm tie focused. So the shirt ends up being a secondary issue. But when I buy the shirt I go for the look, which is usually wide stripes. Except that I also heed my Dad's advice, "one can never have enough white shirts". So I pick the tie then go back to the shirt. If I'm in a hurry, which is often because surgery starts at 0730 and there is travel time, etc., it ends up being white- no time to hem and haw.

But really, the idea of buying 5 white shirts on purpose is kind of depressing to me- same shirt, same wife, same work- would make me feel like f**king the nurse out of principle.
