These babies look awesome...

Those do look nice. I think the problem with my search has been that I've been looking for a shoe that's sort of a conflation between desert boot and English chukka, and I think maybe it's better to choose one or the other. Though I will say that the Alden version that I saw in person, looked pretty damn nice. And you get the option of so many sizes and widths, which I'm finding is great.
There was another shoe that I wanted to get, sorry for the semi-hijack, and that is the Alden Scotch pebble-grain shoe in brown with a 1/4 leather and 3/4 crepe sole. That looks nice too. Even though it's on the much-maligned Barrie last. It's a touch, all-weather shoe that's light enough for summer.
As I've said, I've been very impressed with the lads at Alden Store, and have developed enough of a loyalty to not mind paying the full kit and kaboodle (sp?) for the shoes.
Dopey's mouldered shoes are famous.
Yeasty!
Those Ben Silver Italian-made suede shoes just look sort of "off" to me. The uppers seem too low for a classic desert/chukka boot, yet too high for a simple oxford (in the broad sense of the term). In fairness, maybe it's just the angle of the photograph.
Ahhhhh - The famous American Asshat. More and more we have it over here too. Globalisation at work once more?
