Dylan is one of my all time favorite songwriters and all time worst singers.
Coming to a Starbucks near you...
Without bob's singing as an icebreaker, neither Hendrix or that Dire bloke, to name just two, would have been possible.
I'd dispute that fxh.
Now I'm a huge Dylan fan, so don't misunderstand, but his singing is generally a crime against humanity. Certain songs need his voice, Tangled up in Blue for example, but most of his songs are done much, much better by other artists.

I used to completely dismiss Dylan from a performance perspective. The voice had almost everything to do with it. But his earlier works have grown on me over the years.
Now Diamond, there's a man that can write AND sing, AND look good in a sequin-bedecked polyester suit with a deep V neck that lets all that sexy man hair hang out all over the place. MMMMHHMMMMM. Cracklin Rosie get on board with that.
And he was a people's man too, understood their desires, ther heir hopes and dreams of coming to America.....

What did Dylan do to compete with that?

lol.
Neil Young is another folky singer-songwriter I've never really come around to appreciating. Considering his massive success, he's also got an acute case of bad voice syndrome. I'll take Phil Ochs and Joni Mitchell over Young and Dylan.
C'mon WM, you can't be serious. Young had some hits and misses for sure, but has a lot of good stuff. Joni Mitchell? Barf. I'da pulled a Bluto Blutarsky on her if I had ever come across her whiny nonsense in person.
I'm dead serious. I think her first 5 or 6 records are great. The Hissing of Summer Lawns is kind of where she goes sour IMO, and then she did put out some really horrendous stuff that I won't touch with a 10 foot pole. She plays and sings circles around Neil Young.
Sometimes I just need to nurture my inner hippie chick.
What the world needs now is another folk singer like I need a hole in my head.
I use to have a teenage crush on Suzanne Vega.
