That story really makes me sad. If I had seen that guy driving with those animals in that trailer I would have raced ahead of him, pulled in front of him, and stopped.

It's obvious that they face backwards to keep the wind out of their eyes. They need front view mirrors so they can see upcoming bridges and duck. Or a wind deflector. Maybe both.
