Interesting sartorial quirk i've noticed in Ireland and Scotland
men wearing ONLY the bottom jacket button fastened. I saw this as soon as i got off the plane in Dublin. at first i figured the gent was just in a hurry and had forgotten the other button, but he was wearing a 2 button, so it occurred to me that the bottom probably wasnt supposed to be fastened at all. i saw this numerous times while in Dublin, almost always with 2 button jackets, but once i got to Edinburgh i saw it on 3 buttons! just the bottom fastened on a straight 3-button! is this a regional thing i'm missing? i've also seen loads of 3 buttons with all 3 done.

This is a sartorial effect meant to spite English norms.
The male natives of Ireland and Scotland are also known to don skirts on occasion.
It's all very odd.

the bottom button only thing is really odd, I've never even seen that myself
buttoning all 3 is common, go to any "mod nite" at the club and more guys will have all 3 buttons closed than not.

Not to go off on too much of a tangent, but what actually is the rationale behind the 'bottom button never' rule when almost all contemporary RTW garments are patently constructed to allow the bottom button to be fastened?
Some of today's high buttoning two button jackets just do not look good fastened at the top, almost at the sternum. I wear a couple of mine always open for just this reason. Maybe the Scots, no giants among the Europeans, are making the Duke of Kent's assumption that it makes them look lean and tall? Or perhaps it's the heritage of school uniforms, because you wouldn't button your blazer according to any 'rule'. I know I never did.
I've seen this style of buttoning often enough here on the Continent though. Not just on small men or young inexperienced dressers either. Perhaps it can be put down to everyone growing up with zippered topcoats and tracksuit tops?
