You should try Paul Smith as well. Many of the socks are manufactured by Corgi. It is one of the only places I know to find glen plaid and other fancy socks.

What are the rules for wearing bright red, dark red, plum or royal blue socks etc. with dark suits for work? Speaking from an American perspective, is it done? Are you supposed to match them to something else in the outfit?
I wear a lot of black socks with my charcoal suits and black shoes. According to this black is whack?

Royce: Used to make the $35? wide ribbed 75% cashmere / 25% nylon (in red!) and other OTC socks in Martinsburg, WV that were a staple of better quality US men's stores. Closed. Try getting anything similar from Europe for less than $75. The name Royce hosiery still exists, but the products have changed significantly.

Maus and Hoffman sells a good quality over the calf cotton lisle sock available by mail order that comes sized. Made in Italy, but not shiny. The elastic stays that way (unlike Dore Dore). The Corgi cashmere socks (e.g. the cable) pill immediately after washing. They look great new, however. Howard's level of detail on the Royce brand is quite interesting.

This is a wonderful original post and very interesting thread which I've read and re-read often.
I often go for baby pink, maroon, red, canary yellow or blue socks. I like them a bit outlandish, especially with chelsea boots.
What I wear in the winter is kilt hose from W. Brewin. Great colours, just the right OTC length, and well-priced. They are also not too thick for dress shoes.

I have a handful of the VK Nagrani (Ovadafut) socks, and I really like them - they are well manufactured (I have a 10E size foot) although, I do (as suggested) hang them to dry - my wife thinks I am totally off my rocker... Additionally, the colors/patterns are very engaging, allowing me a bit of fun within the context of the staid environment in which I toil...
Had a few pair of the Sulka socks and loved those too (Richemont, bring Sulka back!), although I foolishly threw those in the dryer until they died...
But anything is an improvement over the thick crew length socks I see so frequently on my peers in the community... The same folk who don't hesitate to drop $140 on a Hermes tie, but can't buy a decent pair of socks (or be bothered to get their shoes shined - GOD forbid they actually do it themselves...)
