Re: Scottish Independence

Maybe he is referencing my tongue in cheek post. I'm actually not of those types of immigrants and there isn't a romantic bone in my body.

Re: Scottish Independence

I'd be pretty concerned about the economic fallout of breaking from the UK if I were a Scottish business owner, especially if I shipped my products outside the UK.

This is a good piece in The Independent:

Have to agree that the "No" campaign has been fought on striking fear into the heart of the Scots.

Re: Scottish Independence

Looks like the pollsters mostly got this right.

The lack of a solid, definitive plan/agreement about currency would have killed it for me. Is it not possible to have a referendum for a transitioned separation? I have to think that if this were a vote for independence to occur a few years down the road, it might have passed.

Re: Scottish Independence

The No vote has left just of much of a political mess as a Yes vote would have done. Scotland will continue to be heavily subsidised and it's people will continue to enjoy benefits, voted in by it's partially devolved government, that are denied to people in England. These not inconsiderable benefits include free university tuition and free medicine when it is prescribed by a doctor. As part of the campaign for a Yes vote the UK government have promised increased spending powers to the Scottish parliament so we will see more of these perks for people north of the border. I predict a backlash by people in the rest of the UK who are fed up with footing the bill.

Re: Scottish Independence

Look at the turn outs.

" If voting changed anything they would ban it" did not impact on this issue. Scots win either way. Local matters can no longer be ignored.

Re: Scottish Independence

I'm Italian, but i'm happy today for the result of referendum; i'm happy that the Union is save.
Here in Italy many peoples not have a clear vision about the difference between the various parts of United Kingdom:
For many of us are all "Inglesi".
But even though the British people, especially the establishment, has watched to italians with a bit of superiority (is famous  the story of a English that arrives in Florence and during a party is presented to the British residents, and ask: where are the Italians?
And a old chap said "By Jove; you do not really want frequent  those peoples"!) Italians have always loved and admired United Kingdom.
Even our sartorial tradition is born from the desire of "dress like an English".
