The West Lothian question?

The question itself is famously attributed to the then Labour MP for West Lothian, Tam Dalyell, who raised it in 1977 when Jim Callaghan's Labour government proposed a devolved assembly in Edinburgh.

Put simply , it asks why Scottish, Welsh or indeed Northern Irish MPs have the same right to vote at Westminster as any English MP now that large areas of policy are devolved to national parliaments and assemblies in areas such as health, housing, schools and policing.

Often translated as "English votes for English laws", the question also comes up if non-English MPs become UK ministers and push through controversial England-only measures, even as their devolved government rejects them.

What should follow the Scottish "no " vote and further devolved powers should be a devolved English parliament, with full legislative powers, akin to the Scottish Parliament. We have heard from Scotland its England's time now, expect UKIP to make great capital from this in the coming months.

It's really a weird situation. My honest opinion is the UK needs to be federalized.

It's Balkanising and we all know it, the Yes vote lost this time, but it will come again, as it will in other parts of the UK. Eventually, it will disintegrate into competing kingdoms and as for democracy, they will care nought.

Re: The West Lothian question?

I agree. If you federalized then each region would have control over it's local spending and the federal government the national (UK) issues. The amount of spending power that is concentrated in London is beyond hilarious. Furthermore, cities should have their own revenues, counties, and so forth. Having the money go all the way to London and back is inefficient and absurd.

Re: The West Lothian question?

That was of course Maggie's trick to have all the business taxes in industrialised areas be centralised into Westminister for sharing out "equally". Nevertheless, local councils have vast budgets and power too, such as in the apartheid state that is the Rotten Borough of Tower Hamlets. Federalization, really Balkanisation will only weaken the UK further and leave it ripe for further exploitation and abuse by that which has come to destroy us.

Disagree, it will make you much, much stronger. Your governance will be much more effective.

Re: The West Lothian question?

Not only leftist, but highly corrupt. The local socialist council in Liverpool during the 80s was a prime example of this.
