Damned hipsters.

Re: On Hipsters...

Full of promise and yet, delivered nothing but some soundbites about dickheads.

Reminded me of Lou Reed's "I'm surrounded by dickheads" routine without the amphetamine.

Any reference to hipsters without Polaroid cameras and pants three sizes too small isn't by someone who has actually met them in the flesh.

Re: On Hipsters...

I've read that second article lately.  Didn't someone post it on here?   I'll be surrounded by hipsters on Saturday night, as I've been asked to fill in on drums for a local hipster-adored band that a long-time friend plays in.  I can probably knock out an in-depth report on Sunday if I'm not in jail for impaling hipsters with my drumsticks.

Why is everyone in the world a twat? Why can't people just be people and do what they like?

Also, at this point, almost every millennial is a hipster.

Re: On Hipsters...

I'll admit, collectively, "hipsters" kind of annoy me.  But I'd gladly hang out with hipsters, or anyone else for that matter, as long as I got along with them and had the desire to be in their company.  As it stands, my circle of friends is hipster free and I probably approximate hipster more than any of them.  Even my friend in the hipster band isn't what I'd call a hipster.  But the girl in the band is exactly what I'd call a hipster, and hipster men want to have sex with her and hipster girls want to be like her.

I can't stand hipsters. Or more accurately the people I describe as hipsters.

This photographer does a lot to document what I see as the hipster and douchebag culture of Atlanta.  Just browse through this gallery to get a feel for what I'm talking about.

Re: On Hipsters...

I honestly don't associate any particular aesthetic with hipster-ism. It's more a personality trait. A vapid shallow herd mentality.

There's some d-bags in those shots though, you can be sure.

Re: On Hipsters...

That definitely plays a big part.  And it's a fact that hipsters come in many shapes and sizes.  It's a hard category to define.  You kind of just know it when you see it.  I think there's definitely an element of trying really hard to fit into the desired hipster subset.  But, especially through music, I encounter plenty of people that could probably be seen as "hipsters" but really they're just some musician that works sound at a club and has a beard, wears a tshirt and jeans, and is just a really straight up person.  Is he a hipster because he's not a frat boy?  I mean, it's a rather nebulous thing.  Definitely synonymous with youth, but I occasionally see the middle-aged creepy hipster, which is always a bit sad.

Re: On Hipsters...

A hipster is one who basically does everything ironically. Clothes, gifts, songs, music, etc. The trouble is that kind of stance is corrosive to actual humans.

It prevents you just liking and enjoying something. That wouldn't be ironic.

Plus you have to be hyper aware of everything in order to be ironic. I mean everything. Advertising trends, clothing trends, pop music, TV.Its hard work. and at some stage you'll get it wrong. Inevitably. Then its just sad and funny. Because what you are being ironic about isn't "got" by people.

Thats why I prefer to get involved with enthusiasts. Like the rockabilly mob. Or even old un reformed punks. Hey even the Hat Lounge is more genuine. Geez I'd even prefer the Talk Ivy nerds.

For hipster bacchanalia, check out "Burning Man" in the Nevada desert every year in September. Video with appropriately ironic score.
