Re: The Ivy Sandwich ...

Oh no, I hope that's not true!

I'm definitely going to make a point to visit in April now, thanks for letting me know.

Do you mean John's on Bleecker St? As a New York timewarp I love it, but the pizza at a lot of those places like Lombardi's (the worst) and Arturo's (better than John's imo) is no great shakes. It's a shame because it's getting harder and harder to find a classic NY style pizza by the slice. Patsy's in Harlem is my favorite of the old NY pizzerias. I usually don't go out of my way for pizza because even in the Bay Area we've got it pretty good (Caffe BaoNecci's my favorite albeit Napoli style) but I prefer the pizza over the bridge at Grimaldi's, Di Fara, Luigi's, Totonno's, Nino's, L&B Spumoni Gardens, even Fratelli's and Louie & Ernie's in the Bronx. They aren't classic NY style, but that's sadly disappearing from Manhattan and the last time I was at John's, it wasn't so hot. I'd give it another shot though. Lombardi's is terrible; I don't mind touristy spots if there's a saving grace but I've scratched that one off my list long ago.

Re: The Ivy Sandwich ...

And the eggplant rollatini and Pastosa Ravioli!!

That's actually my favorite food neighborhood in New York. It's the real Little Italy! J & V Pizzeria, Frank's Pizza, Bad Boys Pizza (dumb name but great), Il Colosseo, Krispy Pizza, Papa Pasquale Ravoli & Pasta, Pastosa Ravioli, D'netto's, La Bella Panini, Monte's Deli & Catering, Lioni's Italian Heroes, John's Deli, Ortobello Restaurant, Tommaso, La Palina, etc. It's my favorite Italian American neighborhood in the country. Boston used to have lots of similar places but they've been disappearing over the years. Bensonhurst hasn't undergone the extreme gentrification that many of the other neighborhoods have seen... yet!

Re: The Ivy Sandwich ...

great Bensonhurst list, been to some of those, I've got a couple of others too, that's a lot of knowledge ... the real nasty tangy old New York slices have been gone for years, that taste disappeared with the junk cheese they use now and the lack of olive oil in the food .... got to say when I lived in NYC I didn't Brooklyn all that much ....... I just got my subs and lots of that stuff at Faicco's, Joe's, Di Palo's and the other places in town ......

the grandma slice is the way to go ...

the disappearance of good pizza, record and CD stores, fish, bookstores, delicatessen food, and American products at L. L. Bean, Brooks Brothers, and J. Press is mindboggling

^ It's worth remembering that hare was designated 'a fish' by the Vatican so you could eat it on Fridays without damnation to purgatory.
Snails are in there as well (hence the phrase 'wall-fish' to describe snails in some parts of the UK - http://www.campaignforrealfarming.org/2012/01/mendip-wallfish-snails/ )

Re: The Ivy Sandwich ...

To take this thread full circle, Pearl Oyster Bar on Cornelia St. has the best lobster rolls, chowder, and blueberry pie I've had outside of ME/MA.

Re: The Ivy Sandwich ...

I like both styles.

Have you tried Mary's Fish Camp one street over? Everyone says it's better than Pearl's but I'm a loyalist. The owner's such a nice guy and I like the atmosphere so I've never been anywhere else for lobster rolls in the city.

I used to take annual roadtrips to Maine every August. I think I posted my list in another thread. I really miss summers in Maine and I want to try and take my wife next year if we can get adequate time off. It's tough to do from the West Coast because it ends up costing enough that I'd rather save the money for Europe or somewhere more interesting, but I think I'm just gonna book on airmiles next summer and spend 3 weeks driving up the northcoast; maybe fly into Boston and spend a week there. I really want my wife to experience it and I'm excited to take her to all my favorite lobster pounds and clam shacks tucked away in hidden coves. I really miss it.

Re: The Ivy Sandwich ...

Love Maine, been going there since childhood, going out to dinner in about half an hour with some of my Maine pals who live here during the winter .....

New England pulls at the heartstrings but then I remember January, February and March ......

both styles of lobster roll are excellent, I like them both too, I would rather have lobster salad for lunch and hot lobster roll for dinner but would gladly eat one at any time of day, even for breakfast .....

never ate at the Fish Camp though it's right in the hood ....

both of those places got too busy for me to deal with so when I needed a lobster fix I'd sometimes hit the old Chumley's or one of my Chinese places for lobster with ginger .....

Re: The Ivy Sandwich ...

outstanding sandwich week, freaks:

Highlights:

*  grilled gruyere and tomato on sourdough from the best food truck in town
*  hot coppa, sharp real provolone, roasted red peppers, oil, vinegar, and oregano on fresh Italian club roll from the oldest Italian deli in town, with a bottle of Moxie
*  rare filet mignon, lettuce, tomato, thinly sliced red onion, easy horseradish, easy mayonnaise, copious black pepper, on a kaiser roll (some folks call it a club roll, I call it a kaiser roll),    with a Cel-Ray tonic and lots of crushed ice to drink

on deck I've got some smoked hot links from Texas hill country that were recently brought to me ... if only I had some sauce from Phillips Bar-B-Que in LA to go with them ... I'll report back with my sauce choice later .....
