Cardigans could well be some sort of test...
You have to be able to carry them off.
Early smart Skinheads, Suedeheads and whoever would wear them from 'The Ivy Shop' or 'The Squire Shop' in England back in the day.

Just been checking out George Peppard in Breakfast @ Sir Winston Churchills Flem spoon.'s:

Sleeveless cardigan ('Sweater Vest' do you call that in the US?) in the early scenes - Bottom button AND top button undone.

I hereby decree that this is the 'Ivy' way to wear one from now on!
