Words fail me:

Wat.
Just stick some German kids and some Russian kids in there. Problem solved, right? What's the big deal?
As usual misinformation from the Daily Mail. The school was not downgraded. It was actually upgraded from its last report.
Nor was it told it was 'too white'. Rather, it was told it should create opportunities for the white British kids to interact with kids from other backgrounds.
The head was on Radio 5 and was very unhappy with the misreporting. She said she had been misquoted and that the story had been misrepresented by the local paper (which the Fleet street rag with an another agenda then exploited so that i -gents could get excited about something other than the rise of their trousers.)
I find plenty else to get excited about in everyday life. But on this particular forum it's all about the rise, nothing else.
The report advocates:
"Extend pupils’ understanding of the cultural diversity of modern British society by creating opportunities for them to have first-hand interaction with their counterparts from different backgrounds beyond the immediate locality."
I mean, this sounds harmless enough. Right? I can understand the prescription. But then again, isn't that what university is for?

The university comment was a joke, Sambrose.
Sort of like your repeated joke about us talking about clothes on a clothing forum. I actually laughed the second time.
Not to mention, we've moved into fretting about how much Tshirt is showing above the open collars of our button-downs. It's quite stimulating.

Ofsted 'to criticise six Muslim faith schools'
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-30129645
"Independent schools, academies and free schools already have to adhere to the Independent School Standards (ISS), which demand that schools encourage pupils to "respect" British values."
I thought the function of a university was to sell as many places, and the accompanying bits of paper, as possible?
Or have we got in wrong in Australia?
I remember reading somewhere, and I may get the ages wrong here:
-up to the age of 8 your parents are the most influential force in your life
-9 to 14 your teachers have most sway over your social development
-14 onwards you get most of your ideas and attitudes from your peer group and the associated media
If schools are implanting the idea in young people that everyone should be open to other cultures and treat people from those cultures as they would wish to be treated themselves, well who could argue with that? It's when there are darker forces at work that the problems start.

Woof is probably right. Yuca is surely wrong. Brooks shirts I've had made post 19th century have been fair to middling.
But back to Ofsted: Why don't teachers simply tell these so-called experts, who probably wouldn't last 5 minutes in a real classroom doing it day in day out, to sod off!

You grow up where you grow up, for better or worse. Most of my grade school education took place in a very racially and culturally homogeneous atmosphere. Heck, even my small liberal arts college lacked diversity when compared to a large public university.
I think being around parents and peers that teach bigotry can be detrimental, but I don't necessarily think being around childhood peers that are like you is a bad thing in itself and is going to create intolerant adults that are scared of other cultures.
