I am Dandy

Anyone else read the book? I finally picked up a copy to check out the photography. There's some good, some bad. Some complete fucking head scratchers like have Chenners and Sven in there (I mean really, wtf).

I think the forward by O'Brien is solid, though it wanders a little in the middle.

Re: I am Dandy

I haven't read the book but my thoughts on the dandy are as follows, the dandy is the height of dressing...when its done well its not jarring or lacking. It exposes your mistakes and your shortcomings like no other style. So I welcome the dandy because it is tough to have such a clear understanding that you can make the link between the simple and the complex. Many just wear a waist coat, a loud pattern trouser or a big hat, that's not what it's about IMO you don't have to look like you've fallen out of 1928 to be a Dandy.

Re: I am Dandy

While I agree with that sentiment, the book really isn't about Dandyism per se, it's title notwithstanding. It's more a well dressed man type deal, and even the forward says most in it aren't dandies.

Re: I am Dandy

I really do like clothes and I can definitely appreciate varying takes on style, but I'm really only interested in outdated Ivy in particular.  This modern notion of Dandyism makes me slightly uncomfortable and I'd feel a bit ashamed to display that book on my bookcase next to the 1950s and '60s school yearbooks I keep solely for their sartorial splendor.

They're thinking that long before arriving at the yearbooks.

Re: I am Dandy

Hahaha.  Trust me, the I Am Dandy book would raise far more eyebrows amongst my friends than the yearbooks.  The yearbooks make good coffee table books.  People, young and old, are drawn to them and actually seem to like looking through them.  If I put out the Dandy book, they'd just make fun of me.  Not saying I'm not a weirdo anyway, because that's evident.

I would say it would be 50/50 on reactions from various interlopers in my house. A yearbook of people I never knew would probably get some stares.

Re: I am Dandy

Hahaha.  I'm sure that would be a good one too.  I have my parents' old high school yearbooks, and also some Emory University books from the '50s.  And I have a Tulane one from I think 1957.  But it's something about those tech geeks that really speaks to me.  I'm always on the hunt for other yearbooks.  They fetch pretty high prices on ebay, at least if they're in good, presentable condition.  And no, I haven't purchased any on ebay.  I just pic them up if I see them in an antique shop or thrift shop.

Dandy for me is about 'approach' not what you 'wear'
