I went into Harrolds today to check out Tom Ford clothes and shoes for some fun and you can clearly see where he gets his inspiration from in terms of shoes, and even for some of his coats.
First l saw this stunning purple embroidered velvet shawl lapel coat, and it has exactly the same feature that Ed Hayes has done on some of his suits with the turned back cuff, and hand sewn buttonholes and functioning buttonholes of course. It looked exactly like Ed Hayes'. A complete dream coat, but you would need to go to pretty extravegant parties to be able to wear it...society parties because it was not your avarege coat. $10,000 for it. The white Tom Ford dinner suits were made with an unusual fabric and were also completely stunning.

The Tom Ford shoos can be are imitations of Cleverley bespoke with their unique gusset shoe with an imitation close cut bevelled waist, but not the real deal because the leather is lower quality and the waist is all cosmetic. Today the shoe waists seemed to have taken inspiration from top ltalian shoemaker Riccardo Bestetti in terms of the extreme bevelled waist with a similar look.
All the Tom Ford rtw clothing and some shoes imitates bespoke features. Tom must look at the internet a lot to get ideas.
10K for a RTW coat? Criminy.
I approve...
...and if he annoys the iGentry, which, judging by the first reply, he has, I approve even more...
lol.
I think it's common knowledge that Tom Ford went around saville Row collecting pigs to disect when he was initially designing his collection in 2006. There is a very strong influence drawn from english bespoke.
The shoes however are a sad copy of the real deal. Very expensive and many features and construction drawn from low grade variants of Blake. The inner soles (the foundation of a shoes) on all the shoes I examined had fiberboard under the sock liner. Only the visible forepart was leather. That folks is serious low grade construction-- and all for the price of very high end RTW. In my neck of the woods they are 25% more than lobb Prestige. That said I don't mind the designs although some of the toe shapes are caricature like in their bulbousness!
I have respect for Ford and what he has built. His suits are made to high RTW standards and the selection or Macassar Ebony veneer for his boutiques is a nice touch for wood lovers to visit.

What they can get away with these days...sometimes it make me wonder....
