Re: REAL English Country Style -

gosh Uncle jack- its like you can read my mind- I don`t know wether the rain choke is still availlable -so many changes at Barbour you know.
but I wore mine today- it`s been a foul wet and windy day and as,I took a stroll to my local at lunchtime- I was glad of the additional protection.

Mines about 10 years old and is indeed green -replaced a red one I had ( was allways a touch concerned once I had left my rebellious days behind that people would mistake me for a sociallist)
it has a little tag for you to write your name on it with a laundry marker-so reminiscent of my school days- where mother would send my school uniform with a bundle of embroidered name tags- to a little old lady in the village -who would dilligently sew them on. 10 pence per tag.

I was once caned at prep school - for losing one of my sock garters - without my name tag on it

re. village Barbers- I stopped using the village barber when it became apparent he only knew one cut. - no matter what you asked for everyone ended up with the same- very, very short at the back and sides (allmost to the scalp) and taken very high - not a lot done on top - other than a quick snip with the scissors across the fringe- all very farmers boy.

Re: REAL English Country Style -

two very good retailers of country clothing are www.brocklehurstsofbakewell.co.uk- they used to make a lot of their own clothing -but as with all things many of their goods are now sourced elswhere and little to no manufacturing is undertaken by them, except for the estate clothing.

Another good retailer is www.johnnorris.co.uk this store is where much of our familly country clothing has been bought over many years- although Penrith used to be so much nicer than it is now.

with the advent of on line retailling all this has become much more accesable- although both these companys have allways done mailorder- I can remember the brocklehurst catalogue used to arrive twice a year - spring/summer range - autumn/ winter range and my father used to order using a tear out order form.

He allways ordered his hankerchiefs twice yearly from here for some reason red spotted hankies in the summer and blue spotted hankies in the winter- allways damm difficult to buy him birthday and christmas presents - with him ordering his own hankies -as a consequence - he was never short of socks.

He was a big fan of Cordings for their moleskins and cords-I got my first and infact only covert coat from here an identical replica to my fathers which must be 40+ years old now.

Cordings still do some nice trousers - but I have found a company called Alpendale who make a lovely hardwearing moleskin and cord trouser
for much less money which I regard as certainy the equall if not superior to the cordings offerings. they don`t have a website but they are based in Hebden bridge near to where cordings moleskin and courdoroy cloth comes from www.brisbanemoss.co.uk

for a little more of a contemporary style and cut in country clothing www.hackett.com have some quite nice offerings this year- I particually like their horse and hound tweed- although is it all becoming a little too Ralph Lauren polo-in it`s presentation.

on the upside they do have Jonny wilkinson as their pin up boy - the injury prone saviour of English Rugby, and at least some of thir stuff has some authenticity about it.

Re: REAL English Country Style -

one of the things that Uncle Jack appears to have missed off his list -is the prevellance of wife swapping that appears to go on in country towns and villages.

I have yet to partake but would not necessarily be averse-I think it is down to the fact that everyone knows or thinks they know all about your business- and swapping your wife with another couple just takes things a step further in a tight knit community.

There could also be an attempt by countryfolk to ape the aristocracy and uppers - who have been at this type of thing for years.

Take Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles ( now the duchess of Cornwall)  for example- whilst Mr. Parker Bowles was having his carry on ...well you know the rest.

I learned only recently that a sure sign of wife swapping is the growing of pampas grass in the front garden.

Country women - I find are extremely sex driven- I don`t know wether it`s all that horse riding or never batting an eye as the ram is turned out with the flock for tupping - some red raw cock action going on there - let me tell you.

like wise with the bull and his heifers.

maybe it`s because pro-creation of livestock is an everyday occurence- but no one in the countryside is uptight about sexual shenanigans.

I can remember watching a rather dishy femail groom undertaking the sheath cleaning of a thorough bred stallion and finding it mildly erotic-  wanting to swap places with the horse.

Re: REAL English Country Style -

It`s a long time since I have seen anyone doing it but - the local farmers used to tie some bale twine just bellow the knee and pull their trouser leg up a few inches   - to allow the bottom of trousers some distance from the mud they were tramping through.

A game keeper I knew used to allways cuff -his trousers- he said it was to allow cross polination of plants and flowers- as he walked through a meadow the cuffs would collect seeds and pollen and when he entred a diffrent field he would gather the seeds from his cuffs and cast them into the new field.

such is country folklore- much of it originates in things such as this.

- Cheeky Monkey.

Same with death, wouldn't you say?

There are very few urban taboos once you get out amongst the fields & farms...

Re: REAL English Country Style -

Uncle what you say about "hairy" reminded me of the homemade pork scratchings that are availlable in my local - the general consensus is that the ones with the hair still on are the tastiest for some reason.

maybe this applies to the ladies also.

Re: REAL English Country Style -

They never warn you do they- some things you just have to discover for yourself- but if you spend an afternoon drinking Perry or for that matter Cider- when you attempt to quietly pass wind - you invaribly end up with a less than pleasant surprise in your underwear.

Hell you don`t even need to be trying to pass wind- cough or move to quickly and the result is the same.

Bloody yokels!
