Re: Brooks Brothers MTM Shirts

Horace,

Thanks for the picture of the shirt. Looks quite nice. You also mentioned that you were thinking of a Swaine Adeney wallet on this thread. Swaine now has a factory shop including some styles of wallets (nicely priced at 20 pounds): http://www.papworthtravelgoods.co.uk/catalogue/wallets/index.html

Regards,

Steven

Thanks Steven.  A good resource, though a pity that the breast pocket wallet from SAB isn't available.  Those stud boxes look rather nice though, esp. in the London tan.

Re: Brooks Brothers MTM Shirts

Ol Chums,

If I may ask the BB shirt aficionadi a possibly inane question.

I always thought the BB shirt pocket had straight across stitching on the top fold, and a straight base with rounded corners.

I have seen some on the web that have an angled stitched top, or rather a v in the stitching.  Is there a rhyme or reason for the difference?

Cheers,
Trip

Re: Brooks Brothers MTM Shirts

Actually looking closer at the Sero they have a shallow 'v' shape to the pocket bottom & no rounded corners as well as the 'v' stitching at the pocket top, but that observation belongs on another thread...

Edit: I'm looking at the Sero 'The Purist' range OCBD. Mid-Eighties again. They have those horrid gauntlet buttons which the Brooks is so much better off without, IMO.

Re: Brooks Brothers MTM Shirts

Ol Chum,

I am glad to learn that my question is not as daft as I had feared. Inane possibly, but not common knowledge.

Here are two current offerings from BB, one with a v and one straight across.  Both supima and made in the USA.

Re: Brooks Brothers MTM Shirts

Interesting stuff.

I looked at Brooks Supima Oxford cloth shirts (regular cut, not slimfit) in solids & the blue candy stripe from various years including the Harvard Coop label ones. I last bought a Brooks shirt around 2002 I think and that was from the Coop. Earlier ones were a mix of NYC ('85), Boston ('86-'90) & mail order (throughout).

We need the rest of the guys to check their shirts to find out more!

Re: Brooks Brothers MTM Shirts

Trippers ol' chum,

I'll check that out, though my experience with Brooks shirts is mainly OCBD and the lightweight version that they sold at one time.  I recall that the ol' Troy Guild shirts (and their private label goods) featured a pocket with the stitch straight across.

Perhaps ol' Meyers will weigh in.

Cheerio,

H.

Re: Brooks Brothers MTM Shirts

I flipped through some old Brooks catalogues last night and saw nothing but 'v' stitched pockets even on casual shirts up to '90 when I kinda lost interest in Brooks.

Landsend's old Beefy 'Hyde Park' button-down (quite a nice bargin shirt) has 'v' stitching, but their 'lesser' shirts do not. There is almost a sense that they use 'v' stitching & straight stitching to divide their 'dress' offerings from their casual shirts - My old Landsend Madras are all straight stitched as far as I can see (although most are now put away for the season).

Could Brooks be using the different stitching in a similar way?

I recall The Squire in Andyland feeling that a Candy stripe was 'wrong' with a suit once upon a time, untrue of course, but is there a general perception out there that the Candy stripe is a more casual item than the solid OCBD?

?????

Just trying to find a reason for the different stitching here. Personally I consider the Candy stripe just as formal as the solid shirts. This I believe to be correct, but who knows how other people view things these days?

... And the quest for the truth goes on!

Re: Brooks Brothers MTM Shirts

We need dates for all this... Rojo?

I say 'v' stitch is "Trad". When did straight stitch come in?

Post '90?

Post 2002? (The Coop could have been old stock or new - who knows?)

It's all a part of the story, not inane at all if you're interested in all of this, Brother Trip.

Nice sideline to this thread.

J.
