Oh dear. I was bored and strayed over here and I wish I hadn't but I can't stop myself from chipping in. I love Hank, the ultimate Ivy archivist with a fresh and provocative take on most issues. But on this I think he's way off beam. The wildly varying expressions of Jewishness, this vast and far-flung diaspora, cannot be conflated with the state of Israel. Hank seems to suggest the opposite - attacks on Israel are an attack on Jews. The creation of the Israeli state has now to be viewed as a gross historical folly, perhaps the ultimate example of the devastating consequences of Western remodelling of the middle east. What Israel has evolved in to is deeply problematic and unsustainable. I fear the situation will only resolve after it has got much much worse. The powerful influence of Hassidic fundamentalism on the instincts of the Israeli government and military is pushing an ideology based on racial superiority that is completely and utterly at odds with the direction of most Zionist thought up to recent times. There sits a rogue state cheek by jowl with other rogue states who despise its very existence. To state this is nothing to do with loathing Jews. The cry of antisemitism in this context is not only inaccurate but deeply inflammatory.
