Gosh I do feel important- like a UN peacekeeper.
Kofi Annan- joining hands across the world.
The point of the post is that Mr. Bell-Drier has infact contacted my goodself via PM , we had quite a good conversation actually-many of the same intrests and what not?
I think he is someone I can warm to.
He actually spoke quite highly of Uncle Jack-and stated he much prefered the Russell street guy - to Terry lean he - very much enjoyed the fogey thread over at AAAC - although not so keen on the Gay trad stuff. ( perhaps he protesteth too much).
he says he may well post over here to defend the traditional stand point of trad once he has collected his thoughts.
anyway just thought I would let you fellas know.
Tom -If you are reading this come over and post - both Uncle Jack and myself would be intrested in a proper debate as to the merits or otherwise of a traditional standpoint.
and by the way - I really am not viscount Tangent.

This is great news.
Tom - Depending on where you are in Yorkshire if you can make it to the bar in the Majestic (through reception, turn right, softly lit, wood panelled room, I'm sure you know it) I'm there this evening (table on the far right, end of the room, facing the bar).
You can also meet two other members of the 'Russell Street' crew.
Drinks might be nice & a chat?
Feel free to PM.
David

The cool thing is that I'm seeing Tom tonight for a bevvy.
are mustachioed men with guns and afros allowed to your partay?
Seriously - I'm signing off now to do a little work, have dinner & then chat to Tom.
Think any of this stuff would happen without the FNB forum?
Tomorrow I will come back home with my armchair.
Laters -

Archie
I had a very nice chat with Tom last night & hope he got home safely.
Thanks to Cheeky Monkey for making this happen.
We agreed on far more things than we disagreed on & found that we had a surprising amount in common. Obviously our worldviews and wardrobes are different, but on "Trad" we seemed to find a real understanding.
The "Trad" attitude is pretty universal & cross-cultural we agreed and different cultures express this in different ways.
English Trad attitudes are the same as American Trad ones on the whole, but the clothes are different.
So what is the "Trad" forum all about?
If it is about social attitudes then it works. But if it is about clothes then it does not.
American Trad clothes are not linked to American Trad attitudes in any real and meaningful way. Same with English Trad clothes and English Trad attitudes. There is a desire that they should be over on AAAT and there is an attempt to edit/revise the history of the clothes to fit the worldview that the Trads wish to project through them. As a result the forum fails as a clothing forum but succeeds as a neo-conservative gathering place.
Either you can talk about clothes or you can talk about politics/religion/social attitudes. Mixing up the two to try to create a meaningful lifestyle movement that can be codified and made to stand up in reality keeps falling down because of all the clothing styles you could have possibly chosen to try to do this with American Traditional clothes are so widly worn and diffuse in their meanings and the types of people that wear them that it becomes pretty meaningless very quickly to try to say that an AmTrad dresser is specifically this or that. For every Brahmin in a button-down there's also a bum in Bass Weejuns out there.
Clothes are just clothes and people are just people.
Not all the conversation was as heavy as the above & I had a good time chatting. Hopefully Tom did too.
I even offered him a bounce on my corduroy armchair.

This is from Andyland:
"Well here I am reporting back on my meeting with Jack Sparrow as promised.
If anyone has ever seen the Sharpe series starring Sean Bean ( Napoleonic wars series,Sharpe been a soldier promoted through the ranks- the very last program being about the battle of Waterloo where Sharpe finally catches sight of Napoleon Bonaparte)
well it felt a bit like that here I was in a Hotel in Harrogate laying eyes on the notorious Jack sparrow or Terry Lean or Miles away or Russell Street ( take your pick)
Jack ( bizarelly he wouldn`t reveal his real name, so we spent the evening calling each other Jack and Tom).
Anyway Jack was at the bar with 2 of his friends who were introduced as Paddy and Jim
( bloody big chaps - dressed in nearly matching clothes Paddy had on a pink OCBD, navy G9 barracuta, and khakis rounded off with some burgundy penny loafers .
Jim had on a white OCBD with a red G9 khakis and what appeared to be identical shoes)
Jack made some obviously "in joke" about them being the biggest jew boy trad poofters in the country which drew guffaws of laughter from the three of them.
What can I say about the notorious Jack Sparrow , well he practices what he preaches.
white OCBD shirt , black square ended knit tie, a mid grey suit ,narrow lapels, 3 roll 2 button stance and a natural shoulder trousers were cut on the skinny side and he had on some highly shined black penny loafers.
Jacks a very animated man , and quite clearly talks with passion about clothing and what he believes in.
to be honest much of what he had to say made a lot of sense and I found we agreed on more things than we disagreed on at heart I suspect that we are both traditional in our approach to clothing it`s just a diffrent form of tradition , he really is very passionate about what he regards as Ivy league and the correct wearing of.
although he does have some odd tastes in drink, he and his friends drank dubbonet and lemonade for most of the evening.
His friends left after an hour or so into the meeting saying they were going upstairs to finnish what they had started?and Jack and myself were left to chat.
He invited me to see his uncles armchair that he had just had recovered and was in paddys van saying that I would really like the cordouroy but I declined.
one of the topics of conversation that I wasn`t really comfortable with was his dislike of some of the posters here , it`s allmost as if he is on a personal crusade against them ,even when I tried to explain that everyones tastes are diffrent and each is entitled to their opinion and viewpoint.
I don`t really know what more to say. If someone has a specific question that I can answer I would be happy to do so just post the question and I will reply.
by the way he is about my age 40, thinnish build, dark hair and quite tanned his most striking feature however is his nose which is very Roman ( he is actually quite self depricating and does laugh at his own expense cracking jokes about this particullar feature)
I supose one of the questions to be asked is did I like him?
on the whole yes he`s certainly entertaining company and laughs a lot, his hummour is very dry and he is quick witted , very generous as well, he wouldn`t allow me to pay for any of the drinks , He said he owed me for the disparaging remarks at FNB.
He invited me to go with him and his friends to a vodka bar called reveloution , but time was running on and I had to be home.
we did exchange phone numbers so I expect to hear from him again.
sorry if all the above is a little rambling I`m trying to remember as much as possible , I know quite a few here will be intrested.
Jack if you are reading this , thankyou for an enjoyable evening, having met you , your`e not such a bad chap. best regards to you and pass on my regards to Jim and Paddy."

I have to say that TBD is the real McCoy. A real old school English Traditionalist. In another life I could have grown up to be him (maybe).
And I'm very glad he enjoyed our meeting too.
Do I hate my "Trad" brothers at Andyland? ... No, not really. I just get frustrated when they act dumb. We all love the same kit - I'd just like them to be savvy about the way they present it to the world & not play 'What-Ho'.
Nothing 'What Ho' about Tom tho'.
And it takes some bottle to walk right in on me on my 'home' turf with my crew round me. Respect to the man for that.
So what can I say? - I liked him. My mates liked him. His views & clothes aren't ours, but he's no muppet.
I'd love him to post here to add to the mix and to take 'Fogey' and 'Real Classic English Style' and really rock the MBs with his knowledge.
Small side point: He shares a window cleaner with my Aunt!
Small world.
Jack.
I`m really pleased you and Mr. Bell- Drier got on Uncle Jack sound like an intresting meeting of minds.
How does he dress?
What does he look like?
I got talking to him via PM about horses - did you touch on the subject?
who are Jim and Paddy do they post on any of the menswear forums.- Is gomez one of them? how about Big Tony ventressca
or Viscount Tangent- where is circumfrenceshire by the way is it one of the smaller - home counties?
My first post over here ,but I felt it was only correct after the nice things Jack had to say about me, I did very much enjoy our meeting and although dubbonett and lemonade , wouldn`t have been my first drink of choice ,I did find it quite a refreshing drink, just goes to show I suppose , you are never too old to learn new things.
Any way, hello to you all, some of you I know from Ask Andy some of you, I don`t I know. Jack and I have had our diffrences in the past but hopefully we have now put this behind us.
He told me last night that we could perhaps discuss some of the fogey stuff over here , which I find of particullar intrest, I know from chatting with DougNZ from ask andy, that he also is intrested in that type of stuff so maybe he will post over here also, he hasn`t posted in sometime , I think he is travelling in England at the moment, so If by any chance you are reading this Doug ,I hope you are enjoying the trip. I will pm you anyway to tell you about a new place to post fogey.
A thankyou by the way to Cheeky monkey who was instrumental in Jack and I meeting.
I enjoyed our chats the other night, and hope you will contribute to any Fogey threads.
Best wishes to you all
Tom Bell-Drier.
Nice to see you over here Tom-Glad you could make the party.
Dubonet and Lemonade?-you told me you were a best bitter drinker- ah the uncle Jack effect.
are you going to change that user name from Tom Bell-Drier-( tumble drier- indeed)
non the less good to see you over here.
Do you enjoy masturbation by the way - I do and I think uncle Jack does.
I can send you some whizzer links to some excellent porn- Uncle jack has even better links ask him nicely and he will send you some beauties-I`m sure.
Thanks for the welcome cheeky, regarding the porn thanks for the offer , I`m no prude but to be honest porn isn`t really my thing, but each to their own.
It appears Tom's thread on AA has already been deleted.
